SUBJECT: Consider Request for Centennial Monument to Display an El
Camino Real Bell on High Street
Background
The Moorpark Centennial Committee is planning events throughout the
year to commemorate Moorpark's inception. The Committee proposes
placing an El Camino Real bell and Centennial Monument on High
Street.
Discussion
The Moorpark Centennial Committee has been able to secure an El
Camino Real bell and proposes erecting a Centennial Monument on
High Street to house the bell. It proposes unveiling the monument
at one of the Centennial events that will be held on June 10, 2000.
The monument would be placed on High Street, west of the entrance
into the Foster Granary building. The area around the monument
would be lined with bricks or tiles purchased by residents and
businesses —names of the contributing residents and business would
be engraved on the brick or tile. The Centennial Committee has
secured the aid of an architect to design the structure. Several
sketches illustrating the location and design of the monument will
be provided prior to the Council meeting.

To date the Centennial Committee has not pursued the solicitation
of a community organization to maintain the monument. Upon
identifying the maintaining organization, staff will ensure that a
liability/ hold harmless agreement is executed.
Staff Recommendation
That the City Council consider the request to erect a monument to
display an E1 Camino Real bell on High Street and review its
location, size, design, and construction.
