Lindley, Director of Community ServicesjY� December 20, 1999 (CC Meeting of January 5, 2000) CONSIDER NAME FOR PARK SPECIFIC PLAN 92 -1 (CARLSBERG) The City Council is being asked to consider a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Commission for a name for the park under construction in Specific Plan 92 -1 (known as Carlsberg) The name that is being recommended is Sereno Ridge Park. BACKGROUND The City has a Park Naming Policy (see Attachment A) which was approved by the City Council in 1994. In summary, the policy states that the Parks and Recreation Commission will consider park names and forward a recommendation to the City Council. Names may be selected that identify the geographic location of the new park, or, when possible, the street on which the park is located. In special circumstances, the park may be named to recognize a national or historical event. Names proposed by the Commission will be considered by the City Council. The approved name will be adopted in the form of a Council resolution. At its November 1, 1999, meeting, staff presented the Commission with a long list of names (see Attachment B). Most of the names on the list were in Spanish and Italian at the request of the Commission. After considerable discussion, the Commission unanimously agreed on the name Sereno Ridge; sereno is the Italian name for peaceful. Several other names were identified as desirable and the Commission asked that those names also be forwarded to the City Council as alternates in the event the Commission's first choice was not selected. The developer has included a park monument sign in the design of the park on which the approved name will be prominently identified. STAFF RECOMMENDATION The Parks and Recreation Commission recommends that the City Council approve Sereno Ridge as the name for the park under construction in Specific Plan 92 -1. 000031 Attachment A City Park Naming Policy (Adopted on August 10, 1994) 1. The City Council will direct the Parks and Recreation Commission to make recommendations on names for all new park projects during or before park construction. 2. City parks may be named in a manner which identifies the geographic location of each park. Whenever possible the name of a street, or the street upon which the park is located, may be part of the park name. In special circumstances, park names could be designated to recognize a national. or historical event. 3. The City Council will consider the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendations and will adopt the chosen park name by resolution. 000032 Attachment B Park Names Name Translation 1.
