MOORPARK CITY COUNCILBRIe c-e7aCoccne.lt M F APO120U G.. AGENDA REPORT BY. t— TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: Mary K. Lindley, Director of Community Servicesjl' - DATE: October 5, 2000 (CC Meeting of October 18, 2000) SUBJECT: Memorial Park Gift for John Sherwood DISCUSSION On October 4, the City Council requested an opportunity to consider the selection of a gift (park amenity) to be made in memory of Mr. Sherwood. Mr. John Sherwood, a Moorpark resident and past Teen Council Member, died recently while attending college in Hawaii. He was nineteen when he passed away. There are a number of options available. The City has a "memorial" Apricot Grove at AVCP. A 24- gallon boxed Apricot tree costs approximately $225. The City has yet to purchase a monument sign for the grove to which engraved bronze plates would be attached denoting the name of individuals to be memorialized. It is estimated that the cost of a monument sign would be approximately $3,000. The City Council might wish to consider the purchase of an Apricot tree and /or a grove monument sign. In the past, Moorpark families have purchased park benches to which bronze plaques are affixed. The Sabine family purchased two benches in memory of Margaret Sabine, which were installed in Poindexter Park. Ms. Carol Kelley purchased a bench at AVCP in memory of her son. Benches, with the plaque and delivery charges, cost approximately $1,800 each. The Council may also want to consider the establishment of a scholarship fund in Mr. Sherwood's name. Scholarships would then M: \MLindley \PARKS \Mr. Sherwood Memorial Gift ccagd.doc 283 Mr. Sherwood Memorial Gift Page 2 be available to lower income residents to reduced or subsidize fees for recreation classes and programs. I have attached a copy of the City's Park Gift Catalog to provide the Council with additional ideas. All memorial gifts are accompanied with a plaque that is placed on or next to the gift item. Additionally, the name of the memorialized individual is added to the "Gift Board" located in Arroyo Vista Recreation Center. Once the City Council decides on an appropriate gift to memorialize Mr. Sherwood, I will prepare a budget amendment for consideration at the next Council meeting. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Identify and approve a memorial park gift in memory of John Sherwood. .:;1 284 MOORPARK .11 GIFT CATALOG A Catalog For Giving Back To Your Community , MAKE A WISH COME TRUE!
