HomeMy WebLinkAboutAGENDA REPORT 2005 0406 CC REG ITEM 10JITEM 1 o - T - CITY of td91t ORPARK, CALIFORNIA City ,'Auncil Meeting of Al-10 -,Aoo S ACTION: G 40A ,�•�v / s.�r MOORPARK CITY COUNCIL 940Af -a3IA AGENDA REPORT BY.-_ &'maj=° ' TO: The Honorable City Council / FROM: Mary Lindley, Community Services Director ` Peggy Rothschild, Senior Center Coordinator DATE: March 28, 2005 (CC Meeting of April 6, 2005) SUBJECT: Consider Adoption of a Resolution Authorizing the Submittal of a Grant Renewal Application to the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging for Older Americans Act Title III -B Funds for Senior Center Support, and Authorizing City Manager to Sign All Related Agreements DISCUSSION The City Council is being asked to adopt a resolution (Attachment A) approving and authorizing the submittal of a grant application to the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging (VCAAA) for $40,000 in Older Americans Act (OAA) Title III -B funds for Senior Center Support. The VCAAA has issued a Request for Proposals to Ventura County senior centers to submit applications for program funding. To be eligible, senior center programs must target maintaining or improving the well -being of persons age 60 and above and funds must be expended by the end of the next fiscal year (June 30, 2006). These funds are being awarded through the Older Americans Act Title III -B. This grant proposal was originally funded by the VCAAA in 2003/04 and renewed for 2004/05, and may be renewable for one additional years. If awarded, the proposed grant funds will be used to expand Moorpark Active Adult Center's current programs, supporting activities that emphasize creativity and exercise. Grant funds will be used to provide services in four component areas: Creativity, Health Screenings, Health Education, and Fitness. The proposed Creativity Program will feature a rotating series 0 00►96 Honorable City Council April 6, 2005 Page 2 of art classes as well as a creative thinking and improvisation class; Health Screenings will be offered for carotid artery and bone density; Health Education materials will include information on diet, skin cancer and sun safety, foot care, and stress reduction; and Fitness Program will include an introductory strength- training class for older adults led by a certified instructor and intermediate -level class and a Building Better Balance class, plus purchase of fitness - related equipment. These grant- funded services will be available to persons age 60 and older and offered free of charge. Grant applications are due April 15, at 4:00 p.m., and staff must submit an application for Senior Center Support funding by that date. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Adopt Resolution No. 2005- Attachment: A - Resolution () �r-317 Honorable City Council April 6, 2005 Page 3 RESOLUTION NO. 2005- ATTACHMENT A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MOORPARK, CALIFORNIA, AUTHORIZING A GRANT APPLICATION REQUESTING MONIES FROM THE VENTURA COUNTY AREA AGENCY ON AGING (VCAAA) FOR OLDER AMERICANS ACT FUNDING TO EXPAND MOORPARK ACTIVE ADULT CENTER PROGRAMS WHEREAS, the City Council is dedicated to the support of quality programs for older Americans in the City of Moorpark; and WHEREAS, participation at the Moorpark Active Adult Center continues to grow; and WHEREAS, funds to provide essential services and programs for the Active Adult Center are available in the form of a grant through the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MOORPARK DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City Council hereby approves and authorizes the grant application through the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging to secure funds for Senior Center Support. Further, the City Council hereby authorizes Steven Kueny, City Manager, to serve as signatory for the City Council on all matters related to the administration of this grant. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of the resolution and shall cause a certified resolution to be filed in the book of original Resolutions. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 6th day of April 2005.
