SUPPLEMENTAL
CITY OF MOORPARK PARKS, RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
To: Honorable City Council
From: Jeremy Laurentowski
Date: January 15, 2020
Subject: Presentation/Action/Discussion Item 9B
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council,
As you may or may not be aware, City staff has spent a lot of time over the last several months
discussing the pros and cons of converting or re-striping the tennis courts at Miller Park for pickleball
with many Moorpark residents. These discussions have generally been very cordial and professional.
We have scheduled meetings with individuals, answered emails, and have spoken with many of them
on the phone.
Yesterday, it came to my attention that the individual who has been the most outspoken for the tennis
community is not a Moorpark resident (Ms. Deborah Singer). Ms. Singer resides in Simi Valley. Ms.
Singer has never verbally informed City staff of her residency. However, we located her address on a
speaker card from the first Parks and Recreation Commission meeting in October. Ms. Singer has not
formally proclaimed to be the spokesperson for the tennis community, but she has taken it upon herself
to speak against any changes to the tennis courts in Moorpark. Additionally, she has provided staff
with a petition of names of individuals against converting the tennis courts to pickleball or restriping
tennis courts for both sports. The petition only lists three Moorpark addresses (see attached). Ms.
Singer has stated that she intends to provide you with a copy of the petition tonight.
Due to the somewhat controversial nature of the item on the agenda tonight, I felt that it was important
that you were aware of this information.
Thank you,
Jeremy
