HomeMy WebLinkAboutAGENDA REPORT 2020 0115 REG CCSA ITEM 09F POWERPOINTTIERRA REJADA INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS OF ALL ABILITIES SOME FACTS •People with disabilities are the nation’s largest minority group, AND the only one that ANYONE can join at any time •15% of the worlds population experiences very significant difficulties ~ World Health Organization •5% to 16% of children are affected by Sensory Processing Disorder ~ Miller, 2006 •1 in 700 children has down syndrome ~ CDC •1 in 300 children has cerebral palsy ~ CDC •1 in 68 children have Autism Spectrum Disorder ~ CDC •500,000 + troops have been wounded in recent conflicts ~ Wounded Warrior Project •40% of grandparents provide child care for their grandchildren ~ National Association of Childcare Resources ADA COMPLIANT VS INCLUSIVE •ADA Compliance focuses on providing access to individuals with mobility issues who use a wheelchair or other mobility aids. •Inclusive playgrounds provide accessibility for the mobility impaired, as well as play components for individuals with sensory, auditory, and cognitive disabilities. •Inclusive playgrounds also allow disabled children and adults to play with able-bodied children and adults in an integrative way. GRANT OPPORTUNITY •Land and Water Conservation Fund provides funding for acquisition and development of new parkland, or renovation of existing park land. •Eligible expenses include outdoor recreation amenities, such as playgrounds, water spray parks, athletic fields etc. •Requires that park use be deed restricted in perpetuity. •50% Reimbursement Grant, City required to fund entire project •Estimated cost of the park is $1.3 million •Estimated grant request $650,000 •Remaining project funds proposed to come from Community Wide Park Improvement Fund and Art in Public Places Fund •Project contingent on receipt of grant funds The Project The Project These experts helped us design play components and playgrounds for children of all abilities: INGRID M.
