TIERRA REJADA INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS OF ALL ABILITIES2

Playground DescriptionTierra Rejada Inclusive Playground will be a destination playground for the community that focuses on creating an environment and playground inclusive of children and adults of all abilities. The elements, structures, surfacing and layout of this playground have all been designed and chosen to ensure that every child has access to play that accommodates their needs, challenges them, and creates a safe and fun experience for the entire community. The theme of this playground will be a whimsical and nature‐based play‐world that integrates itself perfectly into the natural beauty of the park. From the toddler village—reminiscent of Munchkin Land, to a whimsical tree house tower wrapped in a custom sculptured sensory wall and art piece, this playground will be a one‐of‐a‐kind destination playground for families throughout Ventura County. The playground will feature elevated ramps, flush to ground spinners and gliders so that children and parents in wheelchairs can easily experience the taller towers and other elements of the playground. Additionally, the playground will integrate a custom‐sculpted sensory wall and public art piece directly into the playground, where children with sensory needs can explore play alongside the rest of the community. The playground will feature slides safe for children with cochlear implants and a color pallet safe for children with visual impairments. Lastly, the playground will also feature more challenging elements for more physically able‐bodied children as well. This is important for creating a space that an entire family and community will want to enjoy together. Remember, an inclusive playground is about creating a space for children of all abilities to play and learn from each other, but simultaneously it also creates a space where grandparents, injured war veterans and adults of all abilities can play along side their families.4

Ingrid is an occupational therapist who strives to help communities create and run amazing places where people of all abilities can play
together. She acquired a spinal cord injury while in the U.S. Army, resulting in spinal surgery and 18 months of rehab. Despite her
recovery, Ingrid still experiences deficits from her injury. To reduce fatigue, she alternates her mobility between walking and rolling (in a
wheelchair). When walking, she depends upon her right side for sensory information, and upon her left side for stability. These
experiences related to her injury influence her work of helping communities expand their understanding of inclusion for all.
The following Inclusive Developmental summaries were created by Ingrid, who has served as a key member of our Inclusive Play Advisory
Board which helps us develop and create design, and create play components and playgrounds that focus on people of all abilities. Many,
if not all of the following elements, will be included in the playground, along with other custom elements specifically created for Tierra
Rejada Inclusive Playground.
