CITY OF MOORPARK MOORPARK LIBRARY BOARD AGENDA REPORT TO: Moorpark Library Board FROM: Jessica Sandifer, Community Services Manager BY: Christine Conwell, City Library DATE: 09/13/2022 (Regular Meeting) SUBJECT: Consider Library Quarterly Report for Fourth Quarter Fiscal Year 2021/2022 DISCUSSION Attached is the Fourth Quarter Report for Fiscal Year 2021-22 for the Moorpark City Library. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Receive and file the report. Attachment - Quarter 4 Report Attachment— Quarter 4 Report ATTACHMENT: 8.A. Library Board 09/13/2022 Regular Meeting Page 6 Moorpark City Library Quarterly Report April — June 2022 Highlights Beginning the week of April 4, National Library Week, Moorpark City Library patrons can check out a California State Library Parks Pass, a vehicle day-use pass to use at over 200 participating California state parks. Patrons can check out one pass at a time for two weeks. Although the passes are not eligible for renewal, there are no limits on the number of times a patron checks out a pass. The program is funded through 2021/22 State Budget (www.ebudget.ca.gov), which included a $9.1 million one-time General Fund investment to launch pilot programs to expand FREE State Parks pass distribution. Library Director Christine Conwell and teen volunteers participated in the City's annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 16. During the event, they read spring and Easter- themed books, promoted the upcoming Dia de Los Ninos celebration and Composting Workshop, and passed out 200 Easter Eggs with coupons donated by the California Pizza Kitchen. Riya Agrawal, a teen volunteer, gave a short water filtration demonstration at the Library's booth during the Earth Festival on Saturday, May 7, to promote the Future Einsteins program. Seventy-five science kits with supplies to replicate the experiment at home were given away and included a flyer with upcoming program dates. Visitors to the Library's booth could also create seed bombs using recycled construction paper and local wildflower seeds. On May 20, the City of Moorpark released an online survey asking for input on two potential building architectural styles for the new Library. Of the 121 responses received, 80% preferred the agrarian design. On Wednesday, June 1 , the Moorpark City Council unanimously approved the agrarian architectural style for the new Library and directed staff to move forward with design development drawings. The library staff has begun meeting with the new library design team to review the schematic design. The Moorpark City Library officially kicked off the 2022 summer reading program on Saturday, June 11. Three hundred twenty-eight participants visited Tawni's petting zoo, created wildflowers seed bombs with recycled paper, painted rocks, crafted bubble wands, and played various outdoor games. The children's librarian also gave a small presentation to announce the contest winners' summer bookmarks. Kellsie Gifford, the new youth services librarian, started on May 23, 2022. She previously worked as a library media technician while earning a master's degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. In her free time, Kellsie Attachment — Quarter 4 Report ATTACHMENT: 8.A. Library Board 09/13/2022 Regular Meeting Page 6 loves baking (and eating) bread, solving puzzles, and is now learning to play the ukulele. Maya Godard, a local high school Girl Scout, will create an instrument-lending program at the Library for her Girl Scout Gold Award. Christine Conwell, Library Director, will serve as Maya's mentor on the project. Beginning in June 2022, staff will actively encourage OverDrive app users to switch to the Libby app. In Libby, users will find the same titles in a beautiful, modern, easy-to-use app. This change will simplify how we promote the digital collection, train staff, and support users. During this quarter, the Library received and placed 106 Zip Book requests from 68 users. Of the 48 books returned to the Library, only three were not added to the collection due to their publication age. Staff will contact Zip Books users that have had books longer than three weeks to remind them to return items when done. Attachment— Quarter 4 Report ATTACHMENT: 8.A. This year's program is held online through Bookpoints, a website that makes tracking reading easy and fun. Readers will earn badges for every 100 minutes logged and prizes for 500 and 1 ,000 minutes logged. So far, 73 participants have logged 22,508 minutes, with one month remaining in the program! The Boys and Girls Club of Moorpark visits the Library twice a week during the summer for a story and activities. Although the visit is short, only 20 minutes, several children have talked about wanting to come back to look for books with their parents. New teen programs for the summer: • A professional Dungeon Master was hired to run a four-week virtual Dungeons & Dragons campaign for middle school students beginning in June. • Bird Scouts explores feathers, flight, and the unique features of birds. Using tools and technology, teens identify local species and investigate environmental changes that impact bird behavior. Attachment- Quarter 4 Report ATTACHMENT: 8.A. Library Board 09/13/2022 Regular Meeting Page 6 • Teens gather weekly during Tabletop Teens to try out exciting and innovative board games. New children's programs for the summer: • Children participated in fun activities, outdoor games, camp crafts, and art projects inspired by a weekly theme during Camp Time. Themes included: Bugs are Rad Young Environmentalist Under the Sea One hundred copies of Conor Knighton's book, Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to- Zion Journey Through Every National Park, were given out in the first week of June for the Moorpark City Library's first One Book, One Community program. CITY OF MOORPARK MOORPARK LIBRARY BOARD AGENDA REPORT TO: Moorpark Library Board FROM: Kim Sexton, Administrative Assistant II DATE: 09/13/2022 Regular Meeting SUBJECT: Consider Regular Meeting Schedule, Time and Place BACKGROUND Municipal Code Section 2.70.080 Organization, and Rules of Procedure Section 12.1, Meeting Time and Schedule, for City of Moorpark Library Board meetings, call for the Library Board to hold regular monthly meetings according to a schedule set by the Board at the first regular meeting in July. As this is the first regular meeting, it is appropriate to set the Library Board regular meeting calendar through June 30, 2023. DISCUSSION Library Board regular meetings for the past 9 years have been held on the second Tuesday, monthly, starting at 6:00 p.m., with additional special meetings scheduled as needed. Staff recommends this schedule be maintained through June of 2023. A calendar reflecting this recommendation is attached. In providing the annual regular Library Board meeting calendar, staff has considered national holidays and a summer "dark" period that aligns with the City Council's five-week summer recess in the month of August. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Approve the 2022/2023 Library Board regular meeting calendar; and 2) Continue with the start time of 6:00 p.m.; and 3) Continue meeting at the Moorpark City Hall Community Center, located at 799 Moorpark Avenue, Moorpark, CA 93021.
