What work and/or volunteer experience do you have that relates to this position?* City planning has been a passion of mine since high school when I did an internship with the Camarillo Planning Department. Then I was hired to work two summers in the department. My degree from UC Davis is a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design with an emphasis on Visual Communications. This led me to work for Mustang Marketing, the largest full-service design firm in Ventura County. During my 11 years at Mustang I served as Designer, Creative Director and Vice President. I was solely responsible for the design of the current logo for the City of Thousand Oaks and worked with them on the implementation of signage throughout the city. I also worked on the rebranding project for the County of Ventura. I have had the opportunity over the last few years to work with the city as a Planning Commissioner, but I have also been heavily involved in the remodel of a building on High Street as well as a remodel of my own home giving me further insight into an applicant’s experience. Max. 1000 characters. What interests you about this citizen appointment and why do you believe you should be appointed?* I grew up in Camarillo as Mission Oaks was developing — before the outlet mall funded center divides and redevelopment on Ventura Boulevard which breathed new life into a desolate deteriorating road. I have witnessed first hand the effects of thoughtful planning on the traffic, beauty and quality of life. As a business owner and resident, I want to have a role in helping to shape the future of Moorpark. With state required housing growth and SOAR limiting our expansion, I know that there will be a lot of infill development and I want to help ensure that we preserve the elements of Moorpark that brought many of us here in the first place. I live on an agricultural zoned property within city limits. My family is out enjoying horse trails, parks and local shops on a daily basis. As we approve developments, I believe it is critical that we build upon these community features and our historic past while also embracing a carefully crafted future. Thank you for your consideration. Max. 1000 characters. EXPERIENCE/BACKGROUND Present Occupation:* C45 electrical sign Licensed Contractor who designs, permits and installs exterior on-building signage. List relevant employment, training and experience, certificates of training, licenses, and professional registration:* I'm an incumbent Planning Commissioner for Moorpark. As a Licensed Signage contractor with 20 years experience in the business, I work in every city in Ventura County and numerous cities across Southern California. The experience of integrating signage into existing buildings and shopping centers combined with writing sign programs to make signage harmonious with new construction has provided me with perspective about design, layout and appearance of a wide variety of industrial and commercial properties. With researching and writing sign programs, along with my daily interactions with zoning and building regulations, I’ve learned about the importance of understanding how Planning relates to everyday usage of properties and what nuances to consider that would enhance the appearance of a property and how it integrates with the surrounding neighborhood. Describe your involvement in community activities, volunteer and civic organizations other than partisan political activities:* Through the years, I have always been in touch with the community through civic organizations ranging from a participant to holding leadership roles. As a member of the YMCA parent child program, I chose to become a leader of the group to ensure the kids and families got the most out of their experiences. In 2022 I was in an advisory role. Max. 1000 characters. What work and/or volunteer experience do you have that relates to this position?* As described above, my tasks in preparing signage for permitting to various cities has caused me to reflect on each job to determine what rules are in effect for a property, how the sign will be attached, how the sign will be helpful to the community in telling the story of the business and how the signage integrates in the overall landscape of the development. I have been on innumerable properties and have seen the good, the bad and the ugly from building design to the layout of a parking lot. I’ve experienced what poor planning can create and how wonderful design can enhance a property, street or community. I focus on small details which may have a much larger impact, without losing sensibility about how small things may cause big problems to developers. I’m well balanced in my approach to use, design and cost. As a Planning Commissioner for the past 18 months, I have grown my knowledge and experience regarding the various tasks involved in decision making and voting on the requests Max. 1000 characters. What interests you about this citizen appointment and why do you believe you should be appointed?* I am a 36 year resident of Moorpark and I believe it has been well developed, in general, over the years. I would like to be part of its further transformation and help guide the next phase in the evolution of our town. I believe that my experiences in our community, my passion for creating a harmonious balance of design and function for businesses and shopping centers, coupled with my technical knowledge of how buildings are assembled, makes me an excellent candidate for reappointment to the Planning Commission.
