The Community Resource Fair featured fifteen local organizations and businesses providing services to Ventura County children, families, and caregivers. The Teen Advisory Group led a rock painting craft, gave out temporary tattoos, and played games with attendees in the park. Other activities included a library scavenger hunt, bilingual and ASL storytimes, African drumming, and a high school jazz band performance. In April, the Library applied for the 2023-2024 Zip Books Program, funded by an LSTA grant from the California State Library. Award notification is anticipated for August 2023, after the 2023-2024 California State budget has passed. In May, the Library partnered with Moorpark Unified School District and Moorpark Recreation to run an after -school pilot program for students in 6th grade. Library staff taught the students new games to practice literacy skills, including reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and word association and led STEM projects and crafts. During the City Council meeting on May 17, consent item 10.G., Consider Waiving Past Due Library Fines, was pulled for further discussion. Council has several concerns regarding the fine -free library model and has requested that additional information be presented later. The 2023 Summer Reading Program kicked off on June 10 with a Touch -a -Truck event in the gated lot next to the Library. Six hundred attendees got to see, touch, and experience specialized vehicles and learn about the organization that provides them. Inside the Library, City Librarian Christine Conwell and Mayor Chris Enegren announced the 2023 Summer Reading Bookmark contest winners, and First5 provided sensory stations for play. During the event, the Moorpark Friends of the Library hosted a Kona Ice Fundraiser that brought in $137! Library Associate, Mackenzie Montoya, graduated with a Master's in Library Science from San Jose State University in May 2022 and accepted a new position as the Children's Librarian for the Camarillo Public Library beginning June 1. The event aimed to "raise awareness about the importance of reading to young children, share the joy of books, build champions for early literacy, and build a lifetime love of learning." Each child who attended the event received a book to take home and build their personal library. Attachment —Quarter 4 Report Library Board 09/12/2023 Regular Meeting Page 8 ATTACHMENT: 1 On Saturday, May 20, the Library held its second Swap Your Stuff program. For this program, participants donated new or gently used accessories like hats, belts, purses, and costume jewelry and then had an opportunity to pick up something new to them. The swap aims to promote the reusability aspect of environmental protection and show participants that reusing items is enjoyable and good for the environment. In addition to the virtual Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) program, the teens have started an in -person D&D club. The idea for this club was for the Library to provide the space and materials for the teens to lead their campaigns. Although the crowd skews young, some older teens help run the club, which will hopefully continue to develop over time. As of June 30, 57% of the 364 registered Summer Reading participants have returned to claim their week 1 and 2 prizes. Everyone is very engaged and excited about the simplicity of the reading challenge this year. Three Moorpark Friends of the Library members and Director Christine Conwell attended the Serving with a Purpose Conference in Ontario on May 23. This conference provides networking opportunities and explores best practices, behind -the -scenes moves, and how-to's for sustaining enthusiasm and on -point work for library staff and volunteers. The Moorpark Friends of the Library hosted their annual membership appreciation social on Friday, June 23. The Moorpark High School Jazz Quartet played soft jazz, allowing guests to mingle, chat, and enjoy refreshments.
