President’s Update
for Moorpark Library Board
May 14, 2024
Elections have taken place and a quorum of the general membership has voted for the nominated
slate for President, Vice President, and Secretary with the following result for the new term of
May 2024 to May 2026.
President Bernadette McDowell
Vice President Rosalie Barili
Secretary Christine White
Carmen Jerome accepted the position of Treasurer as appointed by the above new officers; these
officers plus the treasurer begin their two-year term as the Executive Committee on May 21,
2024.
Other directors have been appointed by the Executive Committee: Diana Fowler, as Bookstore
Manager, and Lou Langkusch as Membership Director. We are seeking a Publicity Director, a
Fundraising Director, and a Technical Director.
President Bernadette McDowell will assume the responsibility of representative to the Library
Board and liaison with the Moorpark Women’s Club.
Vice President Rosalie Barili will coordinate the Volunteer Match program. and have Board
oversight for the newsletter.
Other potential division and expansion of responsibilities await the consideration of the new
Board. Current Board members are assisting in the transition period.
Outreach and Promotion
➢Members of the Board and some general members participated in the library’s Kid Fest on
April 27; at the Earth Festival on May 4; the Apricot Festival on May 11, assisting with the
library’s activities; and attended the State of the City event on May 13.
➢It should be noted that, during city events, our tables are placed together, to demonstrate our
common purposes, to encourage patrons to visit back and forth, and to facilitate participation
in each other’s activity. MFOTL personnel are identified by wearing aprons with our logo.
As an example, at the Earth Festival, we helped to make biodegradable pots out of
newspapers, and provided soil and seeds to the children—with a surprising number of
visitors even on the misty, chilly day!
Bookstore
➢We have added two more shelving units in our workspace and a dedicated computer has been
donated and set up, assisting greatly in our ability to scan books for resale and organize
books for quick processing in and out.

Fundraising
➢The Night of International Dance and Culture was a success from the point of view of the
number and variety of dance forms, attendance, and net income of $4,049.38.
➢Two restaurants, M on High and Freda’s, kindly agreed to support the event, M’s with a 10%
donation to MFOTL of all sales from 5 to 9 PM on Wednesday, March 6, and Freda’s a 10%
discount to theatergoers on the night of the show. The M on High evening produced over
$309.80 income. M on High was particularly pleased with the increase in patrons on a
usually “slow” night and has suggested we schedule a similar arrangement every quarter.
Financial
We are reviewing our funds management to make sure we are in accord with best fiscal
practices, with the help of a financial advisor who has volunteered for a one-time evaluation.
General Meeting and Members’ Appreciation
We are planning our yearly Friends Membership meeting for Friday evening at the library on
June 21. We are planning, with Christine Conwell, to change the format of the meeting. While
still somewhat “social” in ambiance, we plan on a lively presentation by our librarians of some
of their creative programs. The intent is to more vividly present how our volunteer efforts and
funds translate into value for the community, and hence to promote and solicit greater
participation by the general membership.
