MEMORANDUM
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Steve Kueny, City Manager
DATE: August 27, 1987
SUBJECT: CONSIDER APPROPRIATION FOR TREE PLANTING FOR
COMMUNITY CENTER PATIO
ITEM:
The boxed trees previously placed on the patio have died. The tree
experts consulted by the City indicated that the problem was the
reflection of the sun off the concrete. The only mitigation measure is
to provide a continued supply of water to the boxed tree.
The Facilities Coordinator, in the attached report, has recommended the
placement of four(4) trees in the patio area. This would be an
attractive addition to the Community Center as well as providing a
shade cover for part of the patio. Tree maintenance should be
minimal . The cost would be about $1,000 with the City providing the
labor. This project could be funded by either the General Fund or Park
Improvement Fund (Community-wide portion). It is recommended that the
project be funded by the Park Improvement Fund which is consistent with
the appropriations in the 1987-88 Budget for all other improvements for
the Community Center except for one-half of the cost for air
conditioning.

SUBJECT : PATIO TREES
Attached is a drawing for the location of planting trees on the patio.
I have requested to plant four (4) trees instead of two (2) , the reason
for this is the balance of shade.
The variety of trees recommended by Mr. Boething are the European Sycamore,
California Sycamore and the Fruitless Mulberry. All three (3) trees are
deciduous, hearty and give lots of shade. I recommend the European Sycamore
over the California Sycamore because it has a more formal shaping.
Mr. Boething will donate 36" box trees for whichever variety we choose. To
plant the 36" box, a minimum 5' x 5' square with a bubble sprinkler head
is recommended.
The cost for saw-cutting, core drilling, irrigation and brick trim around
the squares (to match existing planters) could be done for $225.00 per tree.
The price break down per tree is as follows:
•
Saw-cutting and core drilling $ 70.00
Deep root barrier 75.00
Irrigation 40.00
Brick and cement 40.00
$225.00
