Post-Institute Seminar of the City Clerks' Association of
California
The association holds an institute each year to keep members apprised of any
new legislation affecting mandated duties and changes in the profession, as
well as promote networking among City Clerks. After each annual meeting, a
post-institute "nuts and bolts" seminar is offered. This year's seminar
will be a detailed review of the City Clerks' Handbook which includes such
topics as public relations, organization and administration, legislative
procedures, agendas and minutes, elections, annexations, claims and
insurance, and records management.
Of special interest will be the records management portion of the handbook,
which was updated recently and comprises roughly one-third of the handbook.
As you will recall, your Council identified five major priorities for each
Department at your February 3, 1988 meeting. One of the priorities
identified for the City Clerk's Department was the reorganization of the
Centralized Filing System. The City will soon arrive at a time when space
limitations as well as state mandates will require the City to establish
purge/retention schedules. I expect this seminar to be invaluable in this
process.
The seminar is being held on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, 1988.
Classes begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 9:15 p.m. on Friday and continue
Saturday from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This will require my absence from the
office on Friday, and one night of overnight accommodations. The
registration fee has already been paid. Monies to cover these expenses are
available in the approved budget.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the City Clerk's travel request to attend the post-institute
seminar.
