Gilbert, Director of Public Works DATE: October 7, 1994 (Council Meeting 10--19-94) SUBJECT: Consider Authorizing Transmittal of a Letter to Caltrans in Support of Safety Improvements at the Railroad Crossing on Route 118 West of the City DISCUSSION Caltrans and the Southern Pacific Transportation Company (SPRR) have been working together over the past several months in preparation for an upcoming project to jointly construct roadway surface improvements at the rail crossing on Route 118 west of the City. Those planned improvements are limited to surface improvements at the rail crossing an the immediate approaches to same. On September 14, 1994, the City Council Transportation and Streets Committee and City staff met with Supervisor Howard and County staff to discuss this joint Caltrans/SPRR project. Both City and County officials expressed their support of these planned improvements. However, both parties expressed concern about the "ridability" of the road at this location and expressed an interest in requesting that Caltrans construct modifications to the present vertical and horizontal alignment of the roadway in order to provide for improved traffic safety. It was suggested that both the City and the County send letters to Caltrans formally requesting that the upcoming planned improvement project be modified to include these additional safety improvements. RECOMMENDATION The Transportation and Streets Committee recommend that the City Council authorize the Mayor to forward a letter to Caltrans requesting the additional safety improvements to Highway 118 at the rail crossing west of the City, as discussed in this report. t.fOORPARK, CALIFORNIA City Council Meeting of____ 1 D Ir 4 ts S/ ACTIONd" wp\rpt\118_c
