Smith, Recreation CoordinatoC/ DA T E : May 30, 1986 S U B J E C T : Youth Dance Price Increase For at least the past 18 months the Parks and Recreation Department has been sponsoring dances at the Community Center for students in the 6th - 8th grade at Chaparral Middle School. During this time, the Disc Jockey most frequently used has been the California Lights and Sound Company. Initially they were paid $100.00 for their services. In December of 1985, the Disc Jockey received an increase to $125.00 per dance. This amount is $100.00 below his normal rate. For the $125.00, the Recreation Department received basic music service only, as part of what was guaranteed. In addition, if the company had available any of its lighting equipment, then they would include that as part of the service. During the past five months, lighting has been available only twice. At the last dance, staff was approached regarding increasing the amount for music services from the current $125.00 rate to the standard $225.00 rate. With the increase, California Sound and Lighting indicated we would receive full services in sound and lighting at each dance. Serveral issues arise from this request. Obviously, if the department increases the payment to the Disc Jockey, it will decrease the profit we receive unless adjustments are made. However, the lighting available, as a result of the extra cost, is beneficial for two reasons. First, it provides a better all around atmosphere for the dance, and second it increases the ability of the chaperones to observe the activities of the dance. 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, California 93021 (805)529-6864 A y Parks & Recreation Youth Dance Price Increase Page 2 Surveying the dances over the past 12 months, the department has shown revenue of $4914.89 and expenses of $2554.01 for a total profit of $2360.88. This averages out to a total profit average of $196.74 per dance. Thus if the payments to the D.J. were increased, profits at our current admission charge would be reduce to an average of less than one hundred dollars. Therefore should the commission agree to increase the payment to the disc jockey, an increase in admission fees should be looked at. Currently, we charge $2.00 per person or $3.00 for two.* These figures are below the level of admission fees charged by the Middle School. ($3.00) Rancho Simi ($5.00) and Conejo ($4.00) . Furthermore, the amount paid for music services is well below the standard paid by the other organizations. Middle School ($200) , Rancho Simi ($225-250) and Conejo ($200-$300) . * Staff would estimate approximately 70-75 percent of the participants pay the $3.00 for two at the door. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Increase the payment for music services to $225.00 per dance and increase the admission charge to $3.00 per person.
