S U B J E C T : GRIFFIN SENIOR PARK IMPROVEMENT
At the February 19 , 1986 regularly scheduled meeting of the Parks and
Recreation Commission, the Commission reviewed and approved a site
plan and park amenities for improvement at Griffin Senior Park. These
improvements included:
1. Tot Lot
2 . Picnic Area
3 . Swing Set
4 . Softball Backstop
However, at the last regularly scheduled City Council meeting on
August 4th, the Council placed a moratorium on the removal of any
trees over four (4) inches in diameter without their prior approval.
As part of the site plan approval for the proposed tot lot, three (3)
trees were to be removed. Due to the aforementioned moratorium, it has
become necessary for the Commission to recommend to the Council removal
of the trees if the Commission would desire to remain with the site
plan as already approved.
In order for the Commission to make a decision, staff has reviewed
all aspects of the improvement project and presents three options for
review and consideration:
Option #1
Proceeding with already approved site plan
1. The approved site plan calls for the west side of the tot

lot to begin 40 feet from the western boundary of the
park and 35 feet from the southern boundary. This
would require removal of one tree located 38 feet from
the western boundary and two trees located 50 feet from
the southern boundary.
Option #2
Site adjustment requiring the removal of two trees
1. Shift beginning of western boundary from 40 feet to 50
feet thus eliminating the need to remove the tree on
the western boundary, while keeping the southern boundary
as originally approved.
Option #3
Site Adjustment requiring the removal of no trees
1. Shift beginning of western boundary to 50 feet as stated
in Option #2 and shift the beginning of the southern
boundary from 35 feet to 65 feet, which would eliminate
the need to remove any of the trees.
CONSIDERATIONS
1 . Option #2
The shifting of the western boundary of the tot lot from
40 to 50 feet will not impact any of the other proposed
amenities .
2 . Option #3
The shifting of the southern boundary of the tot lot
from 35 to 65 feet will significally impact the following
amenities :
a. Impede into the available open grass area used
for soccer.
b. Require the removal of an additional "rain
bird" irrigation head.
c. Require the shifting of the softball backstop
30 feet to the north of proposed location.
This would impact the other amenities even
further as follows :
o Further impede into the available open
grass area used for soccer.
0 Reduce the distance from the play area

to the picnic area in the northeast
corner of the park to approximately
200 feet.
Significally reduce any serious consid-
eration of a full court basketball court
due to reducing the distance from the
softball backstop to the court area and
thereby increasing the potential likeli-
hood of balls being hit into the area.
