Smith, Recreation Coordinator DATE : November 17 , 1986 SUBJECT : PICNIC SHELTERS AT GRIFFIN SR. PARK ITEM: At the last special meeting of the Moorpark Parks and Recreation Commission, held on November 12 , 1986, the Commission requested staff to include a picnic table coverning over at least two picnic tables at Griffin Sr. Park. The reasoning behind this was due to the lack of shade tree coverage in and around the areas designated for improvements as picnic areas. The Commission should note that the Parks Work Program calls for a completion date of December 31 , 1986 for completion of this project. Plans and specifications have been completed and the project should be ready for bid approximately December 1, 1986. Staff would like to make the Commission aware, that the inclusion, could result in a small additional delay in the project. Current plans call for the picnic tables to be installed on slabs measuring 10 x 9 ft. Staff has investigated several options and presents these as alternatives to the Commission 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, California 93021 (805) 529-6864 Parks & Recreation November 17 , 1986 Page 2 ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Steel Frame Mini Shelter (Iron Mountain Forge) A. Model 868-S or 868 SI Both model are the same except that the second has an optional 8x8 redwood picnic table attached. B. Cost: $875. 00 to $1025. 00. C. Size: 9 feet high and 8x8. 2 . Gazebo (Iron Mountain Forge) A. Model 1400. Several options include flooring, rails and benches. The size of this Gazebo would allow for coverage of 2 picnic tables, although crowded. B. Cost: $2795. 00 price will vary depending on options . C. Size: 14 feet in diameter. 3 . Ornate Roof Gazebo Shelter (Litchfield Industries) A. Model 1900 Open air model which allow for placement of 2 picnic tables. B. Cost: $2540. 00 to $2765. 00 depending on type of shingling utilized. C. Size 18i ft. 4. Standard Multi-sided Gazebo Shelter (Litchfield Industries) A. Model 2600 Space for 2 tables would be possible, but once again it would be crowded. B. Cost: $2250 . 00 - $2400. 00 depending on type of shingling utilized. C. Size 16 ' diameter. 5 . Hex 16 (Poligan) A. Model S16. B. Cost: $2 , 900 . 00 less if delete shingles. C. Size: 16 ft. diameter. Page 3 STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Although staff supports the idea of picnic table covernings in concept, staff would strongly recommend that the Commission reconsider the prior decision to include them at Griffin Sr. Park. This is based on concerns of additional maintenance and upkeep, vandalism and supervision. While they are an attraction that is needed, this park would be unappriopriate . The use of additional fast growing trees is a better long range solution. COMMISSION ACTION: Acceptance of staff recommendation. If not selection of covering type so project may continue.
