Summary of the Parks and Recreation Commission Park Tour of March 29,1998
12:30 p.m.
Present: Commissioners David Badoud, John Oberg, Sandra Thompson, and Chair Parvin.
Commissioner Dubreuil was absent.
City Staff Present: Mary Lindley, Director of Community Services.
2. The Commission toured each of the City's 13 parks. While no action was taken, the
Commission participated in the following discussions:
Poindexter Park: The Commission observed children playing in the various play lots. It
was noted that additional sand and fibar needs to be added. The light bulb on the pole at the
location of the pay phone is missing and needs to be replaced. The Commission discussed
the feasibility of replacing the gazebo.
Glenwood Park: Commissioners expressed a strong interest in proceeding with the
replacement of the older play equipment. They liked the "fort" theme play equipment. Staff
will refine the cost estimates and explore alternative play surfaces to meet ADA. The
Commission also discussed the feasibility of installing lights for the two basketball courts.
Country Trail Park: The Commission expressed an interest in replacing the fibar as soon
as possible. Approximately 15 to 20 residents where on hand to express support for the Park.
Staff will replace the missing lid on the quick - coupler. Staff was also asked to consider
adding the replacement of the sand in the tot -lot with fibar on future park improvement lists.
Tierra Rejada Park: The Commission observed a lot of activity in Tierra Rejada Park.
They surveyed the condition of the tennis courts and expressed appreciation for the new
signs denoting that the courts remain closed when wet.
Mountain Meadows Park: The Commission discussed the placement of basketball court
lights at Mountain Meadows Park and a majority indicated that this Park would be preferable
to Glenwood Park. They expressed an interest in asking MBA to assist with the purchase
of the lights. Commissioners also commented on the play equipment, including, not liking
the color and some of the play apparatus.
Peach Hill Park: The Commission discussed replacing the old wood play equipment at
Peach Hill Park. With limited funds, the Commission considered replacing sections rather
than all of the equipment. No consensus was reached.
Monte Vista Park: Staff stated that grading repairs will be made to the hiking trail to
eliminate the ruts caused by the rain. Comments were made about the appropriateness of
recycling bins in the parking lot.
Virginia Colony Park: The Commission observed the vandalism done to the picnic tables.
The fibar liner in the play lot was exposed and needs to be covered.
Campus Park: The Commission discussed the play equipment at Campus Park. As has
been expressed in the past, some Commissioners would like to see the old concrete
equipment removed as soon as possible. Commissioner Oberg asked staff to consider
relocating the bike racks from near the trash enclosure to the play areas or restrooms.
Griffin Park: The Commission discussed the replacement of the play equipment at Griffin
Park. The slide has been repaired a number of times. Most of the Commissioners felt that
other than the slide, the equipment did not appear to be in bad shape. They indicated that
they would be willing to consider removing the slide if a cost effective alternative could not
be found. Staff will continue to explore alternatives.
Campus Canyon: The Commission looked over the play equipment at Campus Canyon
which appeared to be in good shape. There was a soccer game in progress and the
Commission expressed a strong interest in getting the second goal post installed.
