S U B J E CT : Requested Tribute to Mr. Julius Guis
The City received a request from Pamela Kay Burke who works with Interface, Children
Family Services, to approve a proclamation commending Mr. Julius Guis. Interface
offers counseling, shelter, education and treatment services for abused children
and families in crisis. The annual tribute dinner proceeds are used to support
these services. Mr. Guis is to be the honoree of the 1987 Interface Tribute Dinner.
The attached proclamation has been prepared for your approval, and will be forwarded
to Interface in time for the tribute dinner. Additional background information
is attached for your review.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the proclamation as presented and direct the City Clerk to forward it to
Interface for presentation to Mr. Guis.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE
CITY OF MOORPARK
COMMENDING MR_ JULIUS GIUS
W H E R E A S , Mr. Julius Gius has been a member of the Ventura Rotary
Club since 1961 and is a recipient of that Club's Paul Harris Fellowship award;
and
W H E R E A S , he was a member of the first Board of Directors of the
Ventura County Symphony Association; and
WHEREAS. he was a member of the former Community Chest and a past
Director of the Ven'Cura County United Way; and
W H E R E A S , he was Chairman of the Boy Scout Sustaining Fund Drive;
and
W H E R E A S , he was Chairman of the Y.M.C.A. Capital Fund Campaign
for a swimming pool; and
W H E R E A S , he created the Star -Free Bellringer Campaign which has
raised in excess of $250,000 for the Salvation Army's work in Ventura County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the
City Council of the City of Moorpark, on behalf of the citizens of said City, does
hereby take this opportunity to express sincere and utmost appreciation for Mr.
Gius' countless hours of community service to Ventura County, and also extends
best wishes for continued health and success.

I have been asked by Interface, Children, Family Services of
Ventura County to request from the City of Moorpark a recognition
for Mr. Julius Guis, editor of the Ventura County Star Free Press.
Mr. Guis will be honored at Interface's Annual Tribute Dinner on
May 8th. Your city is being asked to prepare whatever recognition
item they feel is appropriate: scroll, plaque, resolution, etc.
The acknowledgers will not be making a formal presentation at the
dinner, however, their item will be displayed and their name and
recognition will be announced at the dinner. You will be joining
many other cities of the county, state, national agencies and
others in honoring Mr. Guis on this evening.
I have enclosed a short bio on Mr. Guis and a Interface news release
for your information. We would like to receive the recognition no
later than May 1, 1987.

Trustee of Community Memorial Hospital since 1962.
Member of Ventura Rotary Club since 1961; recipient of

believe, that my speech to a United Way victory celebration

Created Star -Free Bellringer campaign, which has raised

Member of American Society of Newspaper Editors for 38
years and in 1986 was chosen as one of 15 members to
represent the Society in the Soviet Union on an exchange.
Married to wife, Gail, 46 plus years. Has son Gary, a retired
Army Lieutenant Colonel now living in San Antonio, and a
daughter Barbara Gius Hill who is in the printing sales
business in Los Angeles and five grandchildren. Loves to play
golf a bit and travel as much as he can.

INTERFACE HONORS JULIUS GIUS
Julius Gius will be the Honoree at the 1937 Interface
Tribute Dinner. Gius will be recognized for his long
time, consistent and positive involvement in Ventura
County.
Gius is the Editor of the Ventura County Star -Free
Press. Gius arrived in Ventura County in 1960 and
quickly became an involved and influential member of
our community. Gius has served as a volunteer or major
supporter of the Community Memorial Hospital; Ventura
Rotary Club; Ventura County Symphony; Community Chest;
United Way; Boy Scouts; YMCA; Ojai Festivals; Salvation
Army; American Society of Newspaper Editors and the
Youth Connection, which sponsored the Interface
California-Model Resource Program linking needy children
with donated community resources.
Honorary Dinner Committee Members include: Mr. and Mrs. Donald
L. Benton; Dr. and Mrs. Al Fernandez; Sher i f f and Mrs. John
Gillespie; Mrs. Katherine Haley; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Maynard;
