Fire captain
bids adieu
to* Moorpark
There were a dozen fire
trucks in Moorpark at one
t.ime or another Saturday
night, but there wasn't a major
catastrophe in the city.
Firefighters from throughout
Battalion 4, which includes
Moorpark, were partying at
the Moorpark Fire Station,
saying goodbye to Larry
Dransfeldt, "Dranny" as he's
known.
It was Dransfeldt's last
shift on the job as the captain of
Station 42, and not only the
rank and file, but the brass
turned out in force to wish him
farewell after 30 years of
service in the town.
There was enough food for
an Army, including a cake
decorated with a house and
orange frosting "fire" leaping
from the windows.
"They really surprised
me," said the captain as he
posed for photos holding a
special hatchet he was even.
"I didn't know this was
happening. I had asked my
wife if she would make some
lasagna to bring down
tonight. I didn't know about
this. It really got to me."
Dransfeldt started out in
Moorpark in 1957, in the same
house he retired from. There
were about 1,500 people in
Moorpark then; there are
nearly 18,000 today. There
were four hired firefighters
and 20 volunteers when he
started, and they lived close to
the station so they could hear
the whistle blow in an
emergency. Today there are
nine full -time firemen.
At the 'retirement
celebration Dransfeldt's first
chief, Val Smith, was there, as
were all the other chiefs he had
worked under during the
years: Mike Sellers (1966 -72),
Willard Burkhart (1972 -82),
and Dale Miller (1983 on). But
Dransfeldt topped them all -
- he carried the hatchet given
him that night, honoring him
as "Moorpark's'Chief. "'
Burkhart said that although
a retirement dinner given by
the county was standard fare,
he didn't remember any other
captain receiving such a send-
off.
"It's the first time they've
ever hail anything of this
magnitude," he said.
"I don't thinly there's
anybody in the community
who doesn't realize the value
of Larry. He's the most
concerned fireman we've ever
Larry Dransfeldt
had," he said. He told how on
his days off, Dransfeldt leas
visited people he has rescued,
even giving flowers to some of
them. "I don't. know another
fireman in the county who
does that."
Dransfeldt had been urged
to move on to other stations
when he made captain as a
means of furthering his
career, but he wanted to stay in
Moorpark, where he believed
he could be of more value.
Another firetruck backed
into the driveway of the
station, and Miller explained
that the other fire houses were
being covered one at a time so
all the men in the area could
come to the party for awhile.
Dransfeldt's crew was on
duty, but unless there was a
major problem, he didn't have
to worry about being called out
during the party.
At the end of his shift, he
was given a dousing of cold
water from his crew, and, with
sirens screaming, was run out
of town.
Dransfeldt had announced
a year ago that he would be
retiring from his job, and the
city honored him by makitig
him the grand marshal of the
1986 Country Days Parade.

BATTALION FOUR • S F =REFSGHTER OF THE YEAR........ BY WILLARD BURKHART, RETIRED
I can't imagine anyone in the Department not knowing Larry, AKA Dranny, but in case there is anyone out
there who hasn't been paying attention, let me introduce him.
Lawrence Maurice Dransfeldt, Captain 42 "B," is hanging up his turnouts the end of March, 1987, and has
been around almost as long as dirt. He came to us from the E1 Paso, Texas, Fire Department on July 1,
1957. What the hell he was doing in Texas in the first place I don't know. I have always been afraid to
ask for fear of finding out more than I really wanted to know.
Dranny was in Basic with a few people some of you may know. Guys like Guinea Tony Caezza, Talking Tommie
O'Malley (senior that is), Recently Retired Walter Scheirnbeck, Everyone's Friend Davey Morgan (I think
Dave still owes me a six - pack), the "Great" James Downs, Mr. Robert N. Bement (I call him "mister" because
of his advanced years; by the way, I heard Bement got promoted, any truth in that ?). There was another guy
in the class I have often wondered about. His name was Stanley Masson, and I would wager he came to a no
good end.
Anyway, back to Dranny. Those of you who can't picture him, let me help. He has the normal complement of
most things, except fingers. He recently sold one of his to the County. He has the same number of ears as
you and I, but his sort of resemble a taxi cab with both doors open. During an emergency, he will be the
guy breathing heavy into the microphone. He is the guy who taught Mike Proett how to use the radio. Now,
do you know him?
Dranny first went to work at Station 42 under Captain Paul "Pinky" Robb. Paul couldn't take Dranny, so he
worked real hard and got promoted away. October; 1962, Dranny was promoted to Engineer at Station 42 under
Captain Don Ellis. Don couldn't take it so he transferred to Simi then and worked real hard and he got
promoted. In 1971, Larry got the message that nobody wanted to work with him, so he transferred to the new
ladder truck. In those days, the Truck didn't have a Captain, so he stayed until 1977. In January, 1977,
Dransfeldt got himself promoted to Captain at- -where else ? -- Station 42 under yours truly, Burkhart. Now
this writer was fat, dumb, and happy in his position without Dranny and the only way I could figure out to
get away was to retire. Then Don Henney came bumbling in. Guess what - -he transferred out! Now Dransfeldt
works for Dale Miller, and what is next? Dransfeldt is retiring!!!!
Now that we have ripped a number of people, let us get to some facts. I could never stand Dranny, but I
put up with him because of his great wife, Annie. If Annie was going to be at the fire station for
whatever reason, it seemed like she always brought something to eat. Oftentimes, the whole dinner. The
really neat part of it was she always brought enough for me.
One of the things that makes Dranny special is his attitude toward his job but more specifically his
attitude toward the public. Not only is he sincere in his concern for the public, but he goes out of his
way to keep tabs on those who become victims ; "those patients who, the night before, were the principals on
a rescue call, oftentimes going out of his way to stop by the hospital to visit or to check on the
condition of one of his patients.
Think of all the times that you complained about dispatching. Now think of all the times that, not only
was dispatching good but was outstanding. Then, how many times did you bother to call and thank them for a
good job? Dranny didn't only thank them, he sent cards and, on occasion, flowers and candy. Guess who
calls themselves "Dranny's Girls "?
In 1983, the community of Moorpark bestowed upon Dranny the most prestiguous honor at their disposal, the
1983 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR. Those of you who are involved in your communities know what a signal honor this
was. In 1986, the newest city in the County named Larry Dransfeldt GRAND MARSHAL of the Moorpark Country
Days. Imagine the pride when Larry and Annie with their nh;ld.ron rnd one grs,- adcici rode through Moorpark
waving to their friends. Oh yeah. ' I forgot to mention that Larry.and Annie live in Ventura and have for
years and years. Obviously the people of Moorpark know who is important to them.
This year, 1987, I have been informed that Captain L. M. Dransfeldt has been selected Firefighter of the
Year for Battalion Four. To this I can only add, "I concur, and I wish I could have voted."
CLASSICS IN TIME,,,,,,,,
Congratulations and best wishes to the following Fire District employees. They earned
5, 10, 15, or 20 years of County service during the first quarter of 1987.
