On June 24, 1987, Deputy Ron Greene was investigating a
traffic accident in the City of Moorpark. Deputy Greene had
witnessed a vehicle go off the roadway on New Los Angeles
Avenue near Science Drive. The driver of the vehicle climbed
out of the vehicle and began running erratically in the
roadway. The driver was then struck by a vehicle attempting
to avoid him. Deputy Greene went to the injured man's aid and
while attempting to treat him was attacked. During the
struggle to subdue the injured man, Phil P. Vuola, 19, of 669
East L.A. Avenue, Apt "E", Moorpark, witnessing the accident,
went to Greene's aid. Vuola was able to pry away the man's
fingers and break his grip on Greene's head and eyes. Vuola
continued to assist Greene and Deputy Winstead in restraining
the man until additional help arrived.
Another witness to the accident stopped at the scene and gave
aid to the deputies. Valerie Anne Jacoby 27, 1017 Walnut
Canyon Road, Moorpark, had stopped as a witness to the
accident. She saw the man attack Deputy Greene and observed
Mr. Vuola and deputies Greene and Winstead attempt to restrain
him. During the struggle, Deputy Winstead asked Jacoby to get
on the police radio in his unit and request additional help,
which she did. Shortly after additional units arrived to
assist.
These two local citizens deserve or thanks and praise for
their unselfish acts in coming to the aid of our deputies.
Without their direct aid, Deputies Greene and Winstead could
have sustained more severe injuries.
I respectfully request that the City of Moorpark officially
recognize these two citizens for their acts of courage.
