HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN 2011 0517 AC REG MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION Moorpark, California May 17, 2011 A regular meeting of the Moorpark Arts Commission of the City of Moorpark was held on May 17, 2011, in the Council Chambers of said City, located at 799 Moorpark Avenue, Moorpark, California. 1. CALL TO ORDER: 6:05 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Schwabauer led the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. ROLL CALL: Present: Chair Amador, Commissioners Blaugrund, Hamous, and Schwabauer Absent: Commissioner Molloy Staff Present: Hugh R. Riley, Assistant City Manager, John Brand, Senior Management Analyst, and Martha Duenas, Recreation Coordinator III 4. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS: None. 5. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. 6. REORDERING OF, AND ADDITIONS TO, THE AGENDA: None. 7. DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEMS: A. 2011 Moorpark Arts Festival Recap. (Oral Report) This item was opened with a video presentation. Duenas provided a recap of events. Schwabauer was impressed with the variety of vendors, but said there are many other groups in Ventura County looking for venues that we need to make contact with. Hamous mentioned that the Arts Festival being held on Sunday makes it difficult for people who go to church. She also inquired about attendance. Duenas said if she had to guess, she thinks attendance may have been slightly lower this year than last. Schwabauer asked about what publications the Festival was advertised in, and was told that press releases and announcements at other City's Council meetings were just a few ways that it was advertised. Minutes of Moorpark Arts Commission Meeting May 17, 2011 Page 2 B. Arts Commission Booth Application — 3`d of July Event. (Oral Report) The annual 3rd of July event will be held on Sunday this year. An application will be submitted for an Arts Commission booth. Riley asked for ideas for the booth. Hamous suggested videography, a bigger screen, and giveaways such as magnets or stickers. Booth should be a fun outreach to the community and a way to obtain volunteers. Chair Amador would like to see the Arts Festival video played. Commissioners will check schedules for availability and let Riley know. C. Consider Applications for Public Artwork at the Ruben Castro Human Services Center. Upon reviewing the Commissioners' tally sheet votes, and reviewing the artists' submissions, a "short list" of four (4) artists was chosen. Riley will contact them to obtain their availability for interviews. A brief discussion ensued regarding the format that will be used for the interviews. Hamous recommended send thank you letters to all applicants. 8. CONSENT CALENDAR: A. Approval of Minutes for the Arts Commission Meeting of February 15, 2011 . Staff Recommendation: Approve as presented. CONCENSUS: Approved as presented. (Schwabauer moved to approve. Hamous seconded the motion.) 9. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS AND REPORTS ON CONFERENCES/MEETINGS ATTENDED BY COMMISSIONERS: Amador attended an architectural class through GSA.
