Harper, Mayor r ) ' $ , . } • Moor ark College p March 11, 1987 Mayor Clint Harper City of Moorpark 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, CA 93021 Dear Mayor Harper: Moorpark Community College has been called "The Little College That Could!" for a reason that you might find of interest. While other schools have been curtailing their programs or watching their activities fade away, Moorpark College has fought back and as a result, we have made many very exciting achievements - most without taxpayer's dollars! By establishing a foundation and creating working partnerships with corpora- tions and community leaders, as well as concerned citizen groups, we have made our college a showcase institution. We are very proud of our 10.000 student school and the 200.000 men and women educated here in the last twenty years. I have taken the liberty of enclosing a copy of our President W. Ray Hearon's recent Proclamation about our accomplishments. Your recognition of our college at its Twentieth Anniversary would add an even greater boost to the determination of students, staff and teachers to continue to be the best community college in America. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Sincerely. yt- erald R. Fecht, Ph.D. Chairperson 20th Anniversay Committee Ilf y Enc. "" N J) -- MAR 13 1987 CITY OF MOORPARK 7075 Campus Road . Moorpark, CA 93021 . (805) 529-2321 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA FROM THE PRESIDENT OF MOORPARK COLLEGE: On behalf of the faculty , students and staff of Moorpark College , I am proud to proclaim 1987 our 20th anniversary year . I welcome the opportunity to invite each of you in our surrounding communities to participate with us in the events planned to celebrate this milestone . As we reflect on two decades of growth and achievement , I would like to emphasize that , although the data contained in this letter are indeed important , it is--more than anything else--a "spirit of place" which distinguishes Moorpark College . This spiritual dimension of collegiality and dedication to excellence is the focus of our 20 years of service to our communities . Here at Moorpark College you will find a student population of more than 10, 000 . Over the past 20 years an estimated 200, 000 students have been educated at this institution . Thousands of students have received their Associate degrees or the equivalent and have transferred to senior colleges . Our Community Services program has offered non-credit classes to approximately 52, 000 students . Moorpark College is , in every sense , your community college . As one of 106 community colleges in California we are an integral part of the higher educational system in this state . Our function is to provide a full range of lower division transfer programs , an objective achieved as the result of careful articulation of our courses of study with the senior institutions . This college also excels in offering our citizens occupational educational programs which train students for business and industry . Prime examples of these programs are our exotic animal training classes ; an outstanding laser optics program and a registered nursing curriculum. We also have specialized services such as counseling and guidance ; a demonstration ranch and equine program and many , many more . We are proud of our ability to bring these classes into the places where you live and work . Hallmarks of the community college system include low cost and convenience of location . Many classes are held off campus at such sites as Oak Park, Westlake , Newbury Park , Simi Valley and Royal High Schools ; at Los Robles Regional Medical Center and Westlake Community and Simi Valley Adventist Hospitals . A unique and well-accepted program in Company Specific Education and Training takes selected classes to the work site of participating businesses , such as MICOM and Litton Aero Products , where employers have contracted with Moorpark College to provide designated courses for their employees . Like so many other colleges throughout the country , we have experienced demographic changes over our 20 year history . Our college today is composed of slightly more females than males ; older students are common , yet the "traditional" college-age student is readily apparent in the student body . We are represented as well by minority students and by a number of foreign students . The backbone of any collegiate institution is the quality of instruction offered . At Moorpark College this is a reflection of the quality and dedication of our highly talented instructional staff. Our faculty have distinguished themselves collectively--and individually in their respective fields . It is from them that we most strongly derive our "spirit of place . " They seek to imbue in our students not alone the academic skills and training one expects from a college environment , but also a sense of participation as this is defined from the Latin word "collegium"--coming together . The teaching faculty are united in this effort with their colleagues in counseling and in other non-teaching areas who carry out the Greek dictum that one should "know thyself . " The excellent instructional program and services provided by Moorpark College are fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges . Our uniformly favorable accreditation reviews over the years have noted our fine academic programs as well as our outstanding championship forensics teams ; complimented the wide range of athletic programs for both women and men; and acknowledged the high calibre of student services and activities on campus . page 2 Special recognition should be paid to the Moorpark College Foundation Board of Directors established in 1980 as an independent and autonomous organization to provide support for college enterprises which do not receive state income . In its few years of existence the Foundation has helped to complete construction of an outdoor stadium and is currently looking forward to the dedication of a campus observatory , the first in Ventura County . We rang in the New Year of 1987 , heralding our 20th anniversary , with the dedication of a carillon made possible through a generous donation . As the college looks toward the future , we plan, with proper funding , an addition to our occupational program facilities which will house broadcasting and graphic arts , perhaps as early as 1990 . Following this , a Performing Arts facility will be constructed and will become a focal point for college and community cultural activities . Instructionally , we are investigating expanding our curriculum to include such programs as hotel management , cosmetology , a physical fitness lab , a fibre optics program to enhance the laser optics offerings ; a fully automated learning resources lab and more . We who are part of the growing Moorpark College tradition have found that there are many things the college can do for you . Chief among them is to bring to you the opportunity to partake of the courses , programs and services I have just described . If you have asked yourself what you might do on behalf of Moorpark College , we would respond by inviting you to become a part of our next five , ten and twenty years . Take the classes you may have postponed enrolling in until now; attend our concerts and student plays and productions ; take advantage of the full range of curriculum and campus learning and recreational opportunities . You might also consider participating in our Foundation , as a board member and/or contributor . You might wish to serve on one of several college advisory committees actively engaged in planning with us for the future . page 3 We invite you, during this our 20th anniversary year, to get to know us personally . Visit our campus . Make an appointment with a counselor . Enroll as a student . Join the speech team. Perform in a play . Participate in our athletic program. Learn needed job skills . Or, simply enjoy a quiet walk around our campus and observe the beauty of this very special place . We invite you, most of all, to let our "spirit of place" enrich your soul . Come join us as we celebrate 20 years of achievement , excellence and dedication to our communities ! page 4
