CITY OF MOORPARK MOORPARK LIBRARY BOARD AGENDA REPORT TO: Moorpark Library Board FROM: Jennifer Mellon, Administrative Services Manage Jo Rolfe, City Librarian, Library Systems & Services, LLC DATE: September 30, 2014 (Meeting of 10/14/14) SUBJECT: Consider the 2014 Summer Reading Club Summary Report DISCUSSION The 2014 Summer Reading Club (SRC), "Paws to Read", was successful and consisted of children's, teen, and adult components. Advertising began in April for SRC programs and the Library hosted a Petting Zoo promotional event on June 19. Summer Reading Club (SRC) overview Children's SRC statistics Overall # of programs = 43 Overall attendance of programs = 2,065 Total sign-ups = 662 Total book prizes claimed = 175 The Library also collected over 30 cans of dog/cat food that was donated to the Ventura County Animal Services in Camarillo. Young Adult SRC program statistics Overall # of programs = 18 Overall attendance of YA programs = 175 Total sign-ups = 146 Total raffle prizes = 9 Total book prizes = 20 Adult SRC program statistics Overall # of programs=6 Overall participants =82 (including book reviewers) Total prizes = 2 1 Library Board Regular Meeting October 14, 2014 Page 2 Total City of Moorpark Summer Reading Club Expenses: $8,464,69 MFOTL Sponsorship amount committed to offset SRC Expenses: $7,53926 June 2014 Summer Reading Club Children's programs Petting Zoo - June 19 (Families) Record attendance of 400 for a children's program! There were goats, chickens, ducks, a miniature alpaca & a miniature 2 year old cow, Parents and children enjoyed petting the animals and commented on what a great event it was while noting what a good SRC schedule we have planned. Photos were taken of children reading to the goats and posted on Facebook after receiving permission from parents. Families and neighbors came inside the library to sign-up for the summer program and chat together. Special SRC displays of books about pets and animals were emptied following the event; 499 items were checked out in 2 hours which is a Circulation record for a Wednesday. The library was jumping with energy and excited children. (Patrons who may have preferred a quieter space during this 2.5 hour event were thanked for their patience.) SRC Kickoff, Aesop's Fables Puppet Show at the High Street Arts Center. Monday, June 23. Attendance: 140. The event began with SRC promotions and thanking the Moorpark Friends of the Library for their sponsorship plus announcing their upcoming Book Sale fundraiser. Librarians were introduced and children's bookmark contest winners were announced. Elizabeth Luce, puppeteer, performed 3 Aesop's Fables: The Tortoise and the Hare, The Lion and the Mouse, and The Grasshopper and the Ant. Audience clapped and laughed at appropriate times. Parents commented on the value of the moral lessons and continuing the conversation of them by checking out the stories at the library. July 2014 Summer Reading Club Children's programs Mondays: Large Performances in the Community Center Apricot Room. • July 7: Balloon Workshop with Mr. Twister. Attendance: 135. Mike Whisner, Mr. Twister demonstrated the techniques to create animals & swords. The children and their families created their own to take home. It was a noisy, busy and satisfying activity for all. • July 14: Juggler David Cousin. Attendance: 125. A delightful demonstration with a variety of objects and sizes. Children came up onstage as "Assistants" with a giant tennis racket, practice juggling with scarves or balancing peacock feathers. • July 21: Rebecca Martin, Storyteller. Attendance: 85. There was a great deal of audience participation as families listened to folk tales and saw their children become the characters onstage. • July 28: One World Rhythm with Paul Hanson. Attendance: 87. Three sets of percussion instruments were handed out to each member of the audience to "make" music together. The whole audience attempted follow the beat, performed a call and response, and tried an echo playback. 2 Library Board Regular Meeting October 14, 2014 Page 3 Tuesdays: Legos. Each week areas of Legos were set out for play. A donation of 6 small Lego sets were used as prizes each week based on the best theme build: Flag, Flying Machine, Animal, House and Person. There was also a weekly raffle for a prize with one ticket per entry per child so everyone in attendance had a chance to win, not just the best builders. Wednesdays: Learning Day. Preschool: Steady attendance occurred with 30 families participating in stories, songs, learning games and crafts. Parents were enthused with the variety of activities and opportunities for them to engage with their children. Elementary School: Science, math & language arts games are offered each week with teen volunteers playing and assisting. Children left with an extra burst of confidence as their brains were engaged and challenged. Thursdays: Read to a Dog. Two dogs (retriever and poodle) visited each week and listened to children read aloud. Children had a choice of a free book from Sage grant or a Carl's Jr. Meal coupon. Fridays: Movies Six animal-themed movies were shown geared towards children grades 1 - 6. August 2014 Summer Reading Club Children's programs SRC Magic Show Finale at the High Street Arts Center and Cupcakes at the Library Monday, August 4. Attendance: 240. A grand time was had by all at the High Street Arts Center for the magic show. Dan Ray utilized many volunteers for his magic tricks for the first 30 minutes and then did a ventriloquist section with his grandpa puppet. The audience was laughing and listening, fully enjoying the show. After the show, the crowd headed back to the library with their reading logs to select a book and stuffed animal, plus, of course, have a cupcake. Cans of dog or cat food were collected and donated to the VC Animal Shelter Food Pantry as part of our `altruistic' aspect of our summer reading program. SRC Lego Time. Tuesday, August 5 was the last SRC lego event which consisted of open free play with all participants receiving 2 animal finger puppets. Wednesday, August 6 was the final SRC Learning Day. Preschoolers and parent/caregivers "played and learned" together with educational games and apps on the iPads. Crafts, puzzles, stories & songs were included and the participants received 2 finger puppets. Thursday, August 7 was the final SRC Read to a Dog. The largest number of children all summer, 15, participated reading aloud to one or both dogs and receiving a 3 Library Board Regular Meeting October 14, 2014 Page 4 bookmark from the dog's owners, and a dog book. August 7 was also the final summer PJ Storytime which was well attended and ended with a Stuffed Animal Musical March. June 2014 SRC Teen Event Teens Summer Reading Club Kickoff, Ice Cream Tasting & Henna Caravan. Tuesday, June 24. Attendance: 22. Most of the attendees had already signed up for the Summer Reading Club. The Young Adult Librarian, Cindy, greeted participants and reviewed the guidelines of the SRC followed by an explanation the ice cream tasting contest. After the participants got their ice cream samples, Jessica of the Henna Caravan gave an overview of the history and uses of henna tattooing. Participants experimented with creating their own designs on a laminated sheet, then had their chosen design applied by Jessica or Kendra. Towards the end of the event, Cindy announced the winners of the ice cream tasting contest. Participants seemed to really enjoy the event (and the ice cream!). July 2014 SRC Teen and Adult Events Teen Makerspace: Zombie Taxidermy: Tuesday, July 1. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 14. Tweens and teens brought a stuffed animal, or selected one we provided, and unleashed their creativity to "zombify" them! Using plenty of red acrylic paint, black sharpies, and white/red buttons as replacements for eyes, participants created some frightening furry zombies. The gory theme appealed to the teen patron demographic who delighted in the opportunity to do something that brought them into contact with a social and learning environment without the expectation of formal interaction. Wii Wednesday Wednesday's in July. 3:00 p.m. Participant numbers vary with an average of 14. Tweens/teens enjoyed snacks and took turns playing Wii games. The most popular game over the summer was Mario Cart. Gaming in the meeting room keeps teens engaged with mental and physical dexterity without the noise disturbing other patrons. Book Club for Adults: The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg. Sunday, July 6. 2:00 p.m. Attendance: 12. The book club met at the library to discuss this month's book club selection. Some attendees thought this was the best book to date. Teen Makerspace: Cupcake Boss Tuesday, July 8. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 16. For this week's Makerspace, tweens and teens decorated animal cupcakes. Ingredients for chick, sheep, and pig cupcakes were provided, but participants were free to decorate their cupcakes however they wished. Photos were taken and posted to social media. Everyone followed his/her creative impulse and had a good time. Teen Makerspace: Cartoon Drawshop with Max Espinoza 4 Library Board Regular Meeting October 14, 2014 Page 5 Tuesday, July 15. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 10. Artist Max Espinoza taught teens simple tricks for drawing cartoon and mange characters, including Mickey Mouse and Stewie Griffin from the television show "Family Guy." Participants enjoyed snacks while they turned circles, lines and arcs into recognizable characters. Teen Makerspace: Make a Zoetrope Tuesday, July 22. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 7. Teens came to learn about the basics of animation by making a zoetrope. First, the group watched a two-minute video in which Pixar animators discussed early zoetropes and explained how they created a 3D zoetrope featuring Toy Story characters. Next, participants watched a video showing them how to make a zoetrope, and then they created their own using the materials provided. Participants enjoyed the process of putting their zoetrope together, then spinning their creations to see the figures inside come to life. Adult: Road Scholar Presentation Monday, July 28. 6:00 p.m. Attendance: 25. Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) Ambassador Jill Swaim shared her experiences as a master presenter for this non-profit organization. She discussed opportunities to experience the joy of lifelong learning while exploring the world. Attendees expressed enthusiasm for the next Road Scholar presentation scheduled to be held in October. Teen Makerspace: Make a Dog Toy Tuesday, July 29. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 10. Teens met in the Citrus Room to learn how to make chew toys for their dogs (or dogs they knew). After providing each participant with three long strips of fleece, the YA Librarian demonstrated the procedure for making the toy. Some participants also learned how to braid since the toys required braiding of heavy duty fabric material. The YA Librarian reminded participants about the Summer Reading Club Finale on August 5, and drew two raffle tickets for flash drives. August 2014 SRC Teen and Adult Events Book Club for Adults: The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty Sunday, August 3. 2:00 p.m. Attendance: 8. Club members met at the library to discuss the book club selection. It was the general consensus of the group that this was not the favorite selection of the past year and because of the mixed reviews the debate was more lively than usual. It was ultimately determined that any read is a good read and the club disbanded with jocular humor. Teen Summer Reading Program Finale/Pizza Party Tuesday, August 5. 3:00 p.m. Attendance: 24. Teens attended the finale and pizza party to celebrate their successful participation in the summer reading program. They enjoyed pizza while the Young Adult Librarian gave 5 Library Board Regular Meeting October 14, 2014 Page 6 an overview of upcoming teen events planned over the next couple months. After more eating and socializing, participants picked a number that determined the sequence for selecting a free book. After they chose their books, the YA Librarian selected the winning raffle tickets for the finale prizes which included 8GB flash drives, a $25 Regal Theater gift card; and the publicized iPod Shuffle and Kindle Paperwhite. CITY OF MOORPARK MOORPARK LIBRARY BOARD AGENDA REPORT TO: Moorpark Library Board FROM: Jennifer Mellon, Administrative Services Manager� Jo Rolfe, City Librarian, Library Systems & Services, LLC DATE: September 30, 2014 (Meeting of 10/14/14) SUBJECT: Consider the Moorpark City Library Quarterly Report for the First Quarter of Fiscal Year 2014-15 (July a September 2014) DISCUSSION Library Board (Board): The Library Board met on July 8 and new appointees were sworn into office. The Board also nominated and chose their president and president pro-tern. The 2014 Board is Robert Perez, President; Heather McGregor, President Pro- Tern; Anne Dickson, David Landry, and Candice Sunseri Boardmembers. The Board also determined they would continue to meet on the second Tuesday of each month. At the August 12 meeting the Board received the Moorpark City Library Annual Report. The report is based on the monthly, bimonthly and quarterly statistical and narrative reports submitted by Jo Rolfe, City Librarian. It was suggested by members of the Board that the next iteration of an annual report might benefit from a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis. David Landry stated that he will review the State Library statistics so that he might be better informed on how to read the data contained within the annual report. The Library Collections Allocations document was also discussed, received and filed. It was determined that the next meeting on September 9, 2014 would be cancelled. Moorpark Friends of the Library: The Moorpark Friends of the Library (MFOTL) met on July 9. Following formal approval of the minutes of the last meeting the group received and accepted the Treasurer's report; heard the City Librarian's report on programing and the Inland Library Network project; determined meeting dates for the Halloween comedy night committee (the Live Comedy at the Funeral Home fundraiser is scheduled for the last Sunday of October)); and the MOFTL newsletter coordinator requested and received input on the next newsletter. Library Facility: During the reporting period the following items were addressed. a) Library cleaning and maintenance was completed while the Library was closed on August 15 for the Library contractor (LSSI) staff training day. The carpet and 7 Library Board October 14, 2014 Regular Meeting Page 2 public computer panels were steam cleaned, windows washed, the skylights were cleaned, and front porch power washed. b) The air conditioning system was overhauled and serviced. c) The front door closing mechanism was fixed by facilities staff. Inland Library Network and Integrated Library System (catalog) Upgrade: Joining the Inland Library Network has enabled the Moorpark City Library to link the Polaris Integrated Library System (ILS) and the public access catalog (PAC) with all Library Systems & Services, LLC (LSSI) operated libraries within the Inland Library Network which includes Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Riverside, and Moreno Valley libraries. Moorpark went live with the Network on August 15, 2014. The number of items available to borrow has increased from approximately 57,000 items to 2.5 million items — or about 44 times as many items. It was a dramatic feat of software engineering and change management for LSSI staff in the Library and the LSSI support team to merge the Moorpark Catalog into the Inland Library Network catalog. Along with the merging of the catalogs, the Polaris ILS was updated to the most recent version with new features and efficiencies including the ability to display items in the eBooks and eAudiobooks Overdrive collections in the PAC as well as send out patron notices about hold items multiple times a day instead of only once each morning. There have been many questions from patrons about the changes to the system's appearance and functionality. The most frequently asked question has been about holds queues. Example: If a patron was number 3 in line for an item prior to the transition they may perhaps now be number 58, which has caused some expressed anxiety. Staff was counseled to explain that although they may be number 58 there are now over 90 libraries, many of which own a copy of the item being requested. This means that there could potentially be more than 58 copies and they are first in queue to receive the item they want. It should also be noted that items belonging to Moorpark City Library always are made available first to fulfill the Moorpark Library cardholder requests. In effect the holds queue is no true indication of when an item will be returned by a patron nor can staff tell from a holds queue when a request will be filled. Patrons are notified by email or phone as soon as the item comes into the library and it is captured by scanning the barcode. Thursday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m. Officer Delpit and her dog Dano, a black German Shepherd arrived at 11:20 a.m. and did a question and answer session with lots of questions from children. Then the children got to pet and play with Dano. This event was well attended with 95 children and adults. Road Scholar Presentation Monday, July 28, at 6:00 p.m. Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) Ambassador Jill Swaim shared her experiences and discussed opportunities to experience the joy of lifelong learning while exploring the world through chaperoned travel. Banned Book Mug Shots Tuesday, September 10 —Wednesday, September 17. For one week prior to Banned Books Week (September 21-27), librarians invited patrons to pose for mug shots defending their favorite banned books. The photos were posted in a library display and on the library's Facebook page during Banned Book Week (September 14-20). It was an educational experience for the participating patrons; many did not know about banned/challenged books, and those who did were surprised to learn about some of the titles that have been challenged. Over 70 patrons participated, and represented a wide range of ages and ethnicities. Ojai Raptor Center— Birds of Prey Demonstration Thursday, September 11. 4:00 p.m. There was very strong attendance of 65 families and curious adults at this event held at the Community Center. Ojai Raptors presented various birds of prey and all in attendance learned about falcons, hawks, owls, and a vulture. Three staff members took out each bird, describing the reasons why some birds can be released back into the wild after sustaining an injury and why those presented could not. Engaging question and answer periods occurred with each bird and everyone was `enraptured' with new knowledge and their curiosities satisfied. 12 Library Board October 14, 2014 Regular Meeting Page 7 Movie Monday. Storm Center (1956) starring Bette Davis. September 22 at 6:00 p.m. This movie was scheduled to mark Banned Books Week and garnered a disappointing turnout with 3 audience members despite being widely publicized for a month. It was designed to offer a forum for debating the theme of freedom to read and nature of censorship in public libraries. Library Contract Staff Changes: Library Systems and Services, LLC recruited and hired 4 new employees to work.at the Moorpark City Library during this quarter. Two staff members were promoted to other administrative and coordinator positions in local LSSI operated libraries, and a Library Page transferred to Simi Valley Public Library. This transition of staff provided the opportunity to schedule in options for flexibility and additional coverage hours by splitting a full-time position into 2 part time positions. Staff flexibility in covering schedules and core tasks can be challenging since our library is open 58 hours per week, 7 days per week. The reallocation of hours provides 4 part time staff members to provide coverage of vacant shifts at the Circulation Desk. All 4 new employees bring unique skills and talents to enhance customer service. One of LSSI's new Library Assistants is a fully bilingual Spanish speaker, and another is conversational in Spanish which adds support to our full-time incumbent Spanish speaking staff member, while enhancing services provided to our Spanish speaking customer demographic. There was little or no disruption of library customer service during the intense period of hiring and training of the new staff, which coincided with the Moorpark City Library's integration with the Inland Library Network. Everyone stepped up to the training and staff on-boarding process, while at the same time navigating perhaps the most significant changes to service that the Library has seen in several years. Library Staff Development: During the August 15 LSSI All Staff Training Day the Library was closed and Library staff met at the Moorpark Public Services Facility. LSSI staff received training and viewed a presentation from our Brainfuse online homework help software consultant who had traveled from Chicago for the event. This was followed by procedural review, discussions and updates, and in the afternoon staff received an overview of the practical implications of joining the Inland Library Network presented by Polaris implementation staff from LSSI. Cindy Holsey, Young Adult Librarian, has become an integrated team member and has adjusted to the challenging requirements of her position. She was hired as the Young Adult Librarian and began her employment during the first week of the pre-planned Summer Reading Club in June, which is the busiest time of the year. In addition to traditional program and events coordination, presentation, and outreach, Cindy has taken on many aspects of website administration, and the Library social media 13 Library Board October 14, 2014 Regular Meeting Page 8 presence. To build upon what she learned at the American Libraries Association conference in June, she has continued taking training opportunities as they arise. These include: • July — September: Ongoing as needed training in City website administration for the Library pages with Melody Johnston at the City of Moorpark. O July 10: The Kid and Teen-Friendly Library (webinar); American Libraries Live (American Library Association) • August 22: Using iridescent programs (iridescentlearning.org) in the library hosted by LSSI Regional Youth Services Training at Santa Clarita Library O September 25: Overview of Bookletters hosted by Booksite trainers via webinar In addition to her regular tasks and duties Meg Thackoorie, Youth Services Librarian, has also been engaged with keeping up to date with developments in Librarianship with a focus on children and families. Her professional development webinars presented by Infopeople during the reporting period included: • August 11: Reaching All Readers; New multicultural books for children and teens • August 30: Creative spaces and family engagement in libraries • September 3: Basic developmental milestones of early childhood As leader of a largely new-formed team, Jo Rolfe, Contract City Librarian has been actively engaged training LSSI staff in order to initiate new hires into the organizational culture, and coach them, as well as existing staff, through the transition to the Inland Library Network. Training delivery mechanisms include webinars and ad hoc training opportunities given by the technology and administrative support staff at LSSI. Hosted webinar attended: • September 25: Overview of Bookletters presented by Booksite trainers Collection Development: Joining the Inland Library Network has been the most significant development in Moorpark City Library lendable item offerings. While it cannot yet be considered a trend after only a month of service, we have noticed a slight decrease in unique suggestions for purchase perhaps indicating that more patrons are finding what they want quickly within the Network without the need to request a purchase. This also has the desirable effect of facilitating the professional Librarian's exploration into a wider range of collection development outlets that can enhance the collections using our available budget. Circulation statistics for our Overdrive eBook content delivery platform, although slow to gain momentum since implementation last October, are beginning to increase. Various efforts to get the word out about downloadable materials took place during this Quarter. Following advice from the Overdrive consultants, who staff approached for tips on increasing Circulation, the Library's item purchasing model has changed from importing records once per month to more frequent attention to eResource collection development. 14 Library Board October 14, 2014 Regular Meeting Page 9 Physical items (books, audiobooks, CDs etc.) purchases were put on hold during the transition to joining the Inland Library Network. This was so that staff would be able to focus on learning new skills and assisting patrons with new features. Purchasing, and discarding of material, in these areas of the Library collections resumed in September. Statistics reflect how many unique views the library web pages received. **Overdrive began in November 2013 so the average is over an 8 month period. Quarterly Report Observations and Conclusion: The innovations and enhancements that have taken place this Quarter will have a significant and lasting impact on Library service. Joining the Inland Library Network has been a large undertaking. Service remained largely non-impacted, while the complexity of the catalog migration, coordinated activity, and software engineering required to integrate the ILS was undertaken. Staff will continue to train and implement changes to protocols when necessary. Moving forward, the City Librarian intends to build on the strengths and diversity of the LSSI team through ad hoc training in customer service, and implementing collaborative staff projects such as cross-training to create calendars and process Library materials. Moorpark City Library has numerous strengths. The offered programming is varied and well attended. Most months offer programming for children, teens, and adults and some months there is programming scheduled almost every day. On average there are between 30 and 38 scheduled programs each month. Library customer service complaints are very few and far between. Staff at the library has been well trained to handle a variety of circumstances and know when to escalate situations to 15 Library Board October 14, 2014 Regular Meeting Page 10 management. Joining the Inland Library Network is very much a strength since it assists patrons with getting materials they desire which is one of the many goals of the library. Weaknesses continue to be mostly in the realm of space constraints. The Moorpark City Library is undersized for the community and does not provide the books or computer terminals per capita that is the state standard due to lack of space. Internet bandwidth is also a concern at heavy traffic times of the day, especially afternoons. Staff is aware of this concern and is always looking for opportunities to improve internet speeds. The City is still moving forward with plans for a new Civic Center and Library expansion. Currently an Environmental Impact Report is under preparation. There are many opportunities for improvement at the Moorpark City Library. Innovative programming, additional outreach, new offerings are all explored each and every month. One of the next projects to be addressed through the budget process is RFID tagging, security gates, and a self-checkout terminal. This project will be presented to the City Council for approval and funding during the Fiscal Year 2015-16 budgetary cycle. CITY OF MOORPARK MOORPARK LIBRARY BOARD AGENDA REPORT TO: Moorpark Library Board FROM: Jennifer Mellon, Administrative Services Manager DATE: October 7, 2014 (Meeting of 10/14/14) SUBJECT: Consider Cancellation of November 11, 2014, and December 9, 2014, Regular Library Board Meetings DISCUSSION The regular meeting in November falls on the Veteran's Day holiday and staff does not have any pressing agenda items to take before the Library Board in November. Additionally, staff does not foresee any pressing agenda items to take before the Library Board in December. If the Library Board concurs to cancel the November and December meetings, the next regularly scheduled meeting shall be on January 13, 2015. If it is necessary for the Library Board to meet before this time, a special meeting shall be called. CALL TO ORDER: President Perez called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m. Ms. Benson administered the Oath of Office to newly appointed Library Board Member Anne Dickson. 2. Board Member Landry announced that the upgrade to the Regional Library network is underway with limited access until September 14, 2014. President Perez announced The Moorpark Education Foundation Food Truck Meetup, will be held on August 17, 2014, at Moorpark High School. President Perez announced "Parents Just Don't Understand" will premiere on August 23, 2014, on the HUB network. The Library episode will appear at a later date which will be announced. 8. PRESENTATIONS/ACTION/DISCUSSION: A. Consider the Moorpark City Library Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2013- 14. Staff Recommendation: Receive and File the Moorpark City Library Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2013-14 and direct staff to submit the report to City Council as an informational item. Board Member Landry inquired if data regarding electronic visits to the City Library website, including catalog searches and breakdowns of different media types be included on future reports. Ms. Mellon responded that since last October the City has the ability through Piwik to do the reporting on web page visits and can bring this information back to the board in future reports. Attachment: Friends of the Library Report 25 Moorpark Friends of the Library President's Report for July, August, September, 2014 • Overall, everything is moving smoothly with the Moorpark Friends of the Library: o Membership declined from low 80s to high 70s,but premier memberships increased o Finances in excellent shape with over$50,000 in checking and savings c Leadership stable with current officer team o Newsletter going great with Rosalie in charge o Strong core of book store and book sales volunteers • Special events over the past three months included the following: o Summer book sale from June 28 to July 9: earned$526 (on the low side of our average) o Children's reality show taped in June with Robert Perez's daughter featuring the Moorpark Friends of the Library and library. Shown on HUB network o Mike attended exhibits at the American Library Association annual conference in June o Two successful special collections sales to individual buyers: 240 fantasy books in September for$40; about 200 romance books in May for$40 o Participated in the MWFC Family Day at the Ranch September 21. We featured our country days sale, live comedy event, and memberships in the Friends. o Country Days book sale September 27 generated $486,with more to follow from porch sale o 2nd Annual Serving with a Purpose Conference attended by Rosalie, Dona and Anne; conference intended to bring people together to discuss ways to better serve our libraries. Lots of great infoi illation gathered • Upcoming events include the following: o Live comedy at the Funeral Home October 26 o Civil War Re-enactment book sale November 8-9 or so > Open issue: Still searching for Social Media director • Ideas being explored: o Investing a portion of Moorpark Friends of the Library funds in higher returning investments o Better ways of acknowledging our exceptional donors for their contributions > Major Friends priorities for 2014: • Build endowment and provide continuing level of donations for the library • Strengthen volunteer base • Improve book store sales,book sales, on-line sales, membership revenues, donations 26
