BACKGROUND The annual California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Conference will be held this year in San Jose from March 2 - 5 . This annual conference is the one main opportunity for parks and recreation professionals to attend a variety of educational sessions, attend the largest exhibit/trade show for parks and recreation practitioners in the country, and gain valuable information through professional networking. Over 2000 members from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii attend this conference each year. In the budget detail approved by the City Council for 1994- 95, the Recreation Division budget calls for two department staff to attend this year ' s conference . In reviewing the topics of the various education sessions, staff feels that there would be value in sending three staff members (the director and the two recreation supervisors ) . There are quite a few educational sessions at the annual CPRS conference in San Jose that are related to teen program and at risk youth issues, which would be of interest to the Recreation Supervisor who has been assigned to develop the City' s teen and at risk programs . There are also several sessions dealing with marketing, classes, and special events which would be of value to the City ' s other Recreation Supervisor, who is responsible for those program areas in the department . The budget allows for a total of $1, 500 for two individuals to attend. Staff is not requesting any more funding for this conference, but is requesting that the City Council revise the budget detail for this line item and approve the attendance of three staff members . Staff members have inquired into ways to save costs, such as driving the city pool car to San Jose, and rooming with attendees from other cities . These measures will keep the costs down and will allow for all three staff members to attend for the same amount of funding. 00055 }2ECOMMENDATION Amend the Budget detail for 01 . 4 . 148 . 632 (Conference and Meetings) to allow three (3 ) staff members to attend the California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Conference in San Jose, March 2 - 5, 1995 .
