AGENDA REPORT
A:.-- 0N;
TO: The Honorable City Council 1", g7t244/-y-xe(
FROM: Christine Adams, Director of Community Servicellialafrargg' ,
DATE: June 29, 1995 (Meeting of July 5, 1995)
SUBJECT: Consider Use of a Portion of Budget Appropriation
for At-Risk Youth Program for Summer Program at
Moorpark Prolect Pride.
BACKGROUND
The City Council has appropriated $16, 000 for At-Risk Youth
programs in the 1995/96 City budget . $6, 000 of this
appropriation is a Community Development Block Grant .
The Moorpark Unified School District has notified staff that
it wishes to continue the Moorpark Project Pride Program, and
intends to retain the Moorpark Project Pride Coordinator for
the next year. The District will only fund the coordinator' s
full time salary and benefit package, and will continue to
provide the current facility at the old High School as an in-
kind contribution.
Other costs associated with the Moorpark Project Pride
Program have not been funded at this time . These costs
include part time tutors, tutorial supplies, staff training,
office supplies, counseling services, and transportation for
field trips . El Concilio Del Condado de Ventura has
indicated that they will contribute $5, 000 next year toward
some of these expenses . City staff has not made a final
determination as to the most effective use of the City ' s
appropriated funding for at-risk youth.
There is an immediate need with Moorpark Project Pride for
summer tutors to assist at-risk youth who are attending
summer school . Staff is recommending that the City use a
portion of the budget appropriation for at-risk youth to fund
five tutors for 4 weeks (July 5 through August 2 ) at a cost
not to exceed $1, 200 .
Staff will make a determination and develop a plan for the
balance of the appropriation by the end of August, 1995 .
RECOMMENDATION
Approve $1, 200 for Summer Program at Moorpark Project Pride.
