Agenda Report
TO- The Honorable City Council
FROM: Donald P. Reynolds Jr., Administrative Services Manager %
DATE: February 9, 1994 (CC. Mtg. 2/16/94)
SUBJECT: Disposition of Surplus Property - Electric Console Organ
Discussion
In 1990, an electric console organ was donated to the Senior Center by Mr. and Mrs. James Owens.
In January of 1994, the City received a second organ from the estate of Helen Dell (former organ
player for the Los Angeles Dodgers). This organ has replaced the original instrument which needs
repair. Staff is requesting Council's authorization to declare the original organ as surplus property
and requests the authority to dispose of it in the City's best interest.
The original organ has been evaluated by professional restorers and it has been found that the cost
to restore the organ exceeds its value. Since a new organ is not needed and the repair is so expensive,
staff recommends disposal. Staff contacted Mr. and Mrs. Owens and they do not want the organ
returned.
Staff will advertise the console organ for sale. If no acceptable bids are received, staff will solicit
interest from local non -profit organizations. If no response to either the bid or the solicitation, staff
will dispose of the organ.
Recommendation
Staff is requesting that Council declare the City's original organ donated by Mr. and Mrs. Owens in
1990, as surplus property and authorize staff to dispose of it in the City's best interest.
