CALIFO::'"'' < • ,' C'ou ... ii Mcc1:: ,J of _-++ ___ 199 4 I CTIO, : # B SUBJECT: Consider New Date for Arroyo Vista Recreation Cente r Grand Opening BACKGROUND Staff has been informed by the Project Manager that the new Recreation Center at Arroyo Vista Community Park will probably not be completed to the point of being operational by the proposed Grand Opening date of May 21, 1994. The event date has already been publicized, but staff feels that at this point, a date change could be made without impacting the event. Most significantly are the craft vendors who have been notified, and many of these vendors have already reserved a booth space for May 21st. Taking action now to change the date would give staff the opportunity to contact these artisans and attempt to retain as many of those who are committed as possible. In regards to the other committed participants, the 50's band, the Fabulous Chevelles, are available for either Saturday, June 11 or Saturday, June 18. It is necessary for staff to confirm the new date immediately with this group. Several service organizations have offered to sell refreshments during the day, and these groups will need to be notified also following the City Council's choice of a new date for the Grand Opening. To date, an advertisement was placed in the monthly Happenings Magazine, which at the last minute had to be changed. The ad will not have a specified date in the copy, but will indicate that the Grand Opening is forthcoming. If action is taken now to establish a new date, information regarding the date can still go out to every house in the Assessment District mailing, as well as through the School District, which distributes information during the early part of April to all students regarding community based programs. The Moorpark Chamber of Commerce is planning their Business Expo on Saturday, June 18. This is also the day before Father's Day, and the day after Moorpark Unified Schools let out for the summer break. A third alternate date would be to combine the Grand Opening with a Fourth of July celebration; however, due to the fact that school is out at that time and many people begin their vacation during that weekend, staff recommends June 11, 1994 as the new Grand Opening Date. RECOMMENDATION Approve date of June 11, 1994 as the date for the Arroyo Vista Recreation Center Grand Opening.
