One mechanism which has been used is an annual recognition dinner which allows an opportunity to stress employees' contributions in a social setting. The employee recognition dinner is planned for December 10. There will be a dinner and an awards/recognition ceremony following the dinner. Some of the areas recognized will include safety records, attendance records, and significant public service efforts. Employees, on their own time, help organize this annual event and have been instrumental in keeping the cost of this function to a minimum. Additional support has been received in the past in the form of voluntary donations which has also held the cost of the function to a minimum. Employees, Councilmembers, Commissioners, associates and their guests also offset the cost of the event by paying to attend. It is estimated that the cost of this year's event will not exceed a total cost of $2,500, and with donations and the sale of tickets, it should be significantly less. Expenditures for this event are most appropriately charged to the Employee Recruitment /Recognition line item in the Administrative Services Department. The City Council appropriated $4,500 to this line item for employee wellness activities, such as special events, presentations, fitness equipment, education programs, etc. Implementation of the program has been less costly than anticipated due to the availability of free speakers, and low cost education programs. It is therefore recommended that these funds be used for the employee recognition effort. Staff projects that we will remain within budget for the fiscal year with the inclusion of the employee recognition dinner in this appropriation. Recommendation: (Roll Call Vote Required) Staff recommends authorization to include the costs for the employee recognition dinner in this year's appropriation for the Administrative Services Employee Recruitment/Recognition line item (01.4.117.639), not to exceed $2,500.
