Approve Additional "Education and Training" Funds
for Business writing Class
BACKGROUND:
In June and July, 1993, the City contracted with Conejo
Malley Adult Education for a six -week "Business English"
review. The classes were held once a week for 1 1/2 hours
each and attended by fifteen City employees..
As a follow -up to the "Business English" review, a six -week
"Business Writing" class has been proposed for seven or eight
of the fifteen employees. The secretary positions are the
ones primarily targeted to receive this training. These
classes will also be once a week for 1 1/2 hours each. The
smaller class size will allow the instructor to provide more
individual instruction and to better tailor the class to the
employees' needs,
The approved 1993/94 Budget currently allows $200 per
employee for "Education and Training." To allow this
specialized training, which was not considered during the FY
1993/94 budget process, additional "Education and Training"
funds must be approved.
The cost of the "Business Writing" class is $405. This
equates to a participant cost of approximately $51 when
distributed among eight employees. This is reasonable when
compared to a one -day intensive workshop which typically
costs approximately $100. Additionally, the classes would be
conducted in City facilities thereby eliminating travel time
and expenses.
RECOMMENDATION: (Roll Call Vote)
Approve an appropriation of $405.00 from the General Fund
Reserve to the "Education and Training" account in
Administrative Services (01.4.117.636) for selected employees
to attend a City sponsored Business Writing class.
