CITY OF MOORPARK
ITEM I I. c .
TO: Honorable City Council l
FROM: Mary R. Lindley, Assistant to the City Managers \f
DATE: December 9, 1993 (CC Meeting of December 15)
SUBJECT: Consider Support for the League of California
Cities' Proposed Dues Increase
Background
During their meeting at the Annual Conference, the League of
California Cities' Board of Directors approved a 3% increase to the
League's annual membership dues. The regional League divisions are
being asked consider the dues increase for ratification and member
cities are asked to consider supporting the effort.
The City of Moorpark is a member of the Channel Division of the
League of California Cities, and Mayor Lawrason was recently
installed as President of the Division at the Annual Conference.
The League works on behalf of the City, and its other members, to
lobby State and Federal representatives for legislation that
benefits it member cities.
Over the last two years, the League has been instrumental in
lobbying our State Legislature during the budget process. Through
the Leagues efforts, the City of Moorpark avoided significant cuts
in property taxes. Predictions for the 1994/95 State budget
indicate that the cities will have another fight on their hands to
protect property taxes and other local revenue sources.
The City of Moorpark currently pays dues to the league in the
amount of $3,953. If the 3% increase is ratified by the Divisions,
the City's dues would increase by $119 for a total of $4,072.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that Council direct the Mayor to write a letter to
the League expressing its support for the proposed 3% increase in
annual dues.
