Gilbert, Director of Public Works DATE: February 10, 1992 (Council Meeting 2- 19 -92) (805) 529 -6864 of ' 199 SUBJECT: Consider Designating Mesa Verde Drive a Through Street and Directing the Placement of STOP Signs at the Entrances Thereto OVERVIEW This presents a Resolution designating a portion of Mesa Verde Drive a through street and directing the placement of STOP signs for traffic entering this street segment. DISCUSSION Section 21354 of the California Vehicle Code allows the local agency to designate any City street a through street. Such a designation permits the placement of STOP signs for traffic entering said street. Several streets intersect with Mesa Verde Drive. Ashtree Street is the only street with STOP signs controlling traffic entering Mesa Verde Drive. There is sufficient traffic on several of the other streets to cause potential traffic conflicts. In order to better control traffic movement and improve traffic safety, it is recommended that STOP signs be installed at certain of the other entrances to Mesa Verde Drive. The existing and proposed additional STOP signs at the entrances to Mesa verde Drive are shown on Exhibit 'A'. In addition, the City Council is advised that consideration was given to designating the intersection of Ashtree Street and Mesa Verde Drive a four -way STOP intersection. The Traffic Engineer reviewed this option and strongly believes that such a designation would not meet traffic warrants. It is staff's opinion that such an Engineering Study would not be cost effective and that this option not be given further consideration. PAUL W. LAWRfSON JR. BERNARDO M.
