Gilbert, Director of Public Works DATE: February 10, 1992 (Council Meeting 2- 19 -92) SUBJECT: Consider Changing the Names of Certain Streets [Princeton Avenue, Los Angeles Avenue and New Los Angeles Avenue] OVERVIEW This report discusses the merits of changing the names of certain City streets. DISCUSSION The names and locations of certain arterial streets in the City can be confusing to those not familiar with the area. Los Angeles Avenue changes to New Los Angeles Avenue. Then one -half mile to the north there is a second Los Angeles Avenue. Further to the east there is a third, called Old Los Angeles Avenue. This confusion will be compounded when the freeway is completed. One off -ramp will be for the newly designed north -south street called Princeton Avenue / Los Angeles Avenue. At the Collins off -ramp there will be a sign making reference to Old Los Angeles Avenue. And then there will be the Route 118 West off - ramp at New Los Angeles Avenue, which of course leads to the other Los Angeles Avenue. This matter has been discussed by the Public Works / Facilities Committee. The Committee recommends that the City Council give consideration to changing the name of Los Angeles Avenue east of High Street, to High Street. It is recommended that this street name continue all the way to and past the freeway, to its terminus at Campus Park Drive. one obvious benefit will be that the new High Street off -ramp will make it easier for freeway traffic to find downtown Moorpark. Street Name Change Page 2 With this change there will be no need for the term E -ew Los Angeles Avenue. It is recommended that the name of this segment of the street be changed to Los Angeles Avenue -- like the remainder of the street west of Spring Road. It is recommended that we take advantage of the opportunity posed by the freeway construction to both simplify the names of certain arterial streets and highlight downtown by with a Sigh Street freeway off -ramp sign. Direct staff to proceed with steps required to make the street name changes discussed herein. rptkara"l
