Traffenstedt, Senior Planner -D5-- DATE: October 30, 1992 (CC Meeting of 11 -4 -92) SUBJECT: CONSIDER CHANGING CODE ENFORCEMENT UNIFORM Background At the City Council's meeting of September 9, 1992, the Council appointed an Ad Hoc Uniform Committee, to consist of Mayor Lawrason and Councilmember Talley. The Ad Hoc Committee was directed to review and make recommendations for a new Code Enforcement Officer uniform. The Ad Hoc Uniform Committee met on October 19, 1992. The recommendations of that committee are discussed below. Discussion The recommendations of the Ad Hoc Uniform Committee are as follows: Uniform should be worn by Code Enforcement Officers and should consist of the following: White shirt with pocket(s) and dark gray slacks Matching jacket (gray or black) Matching patches on sleeve of shirt to include City logo and the words "code enforcement" Identification tag to be worn on shirt No badge to be worn on shirt but should be carried in badge case or wallet Regular black dress belt to be worn. Only equipment which should be attached to belt is radio. Tape recorder is to be carried in pocket of shirt. Flashlight should be kept in car but not attached to belt No handcuffs or mace shall be carried by code enforcement officers Protection against dogs may be carried. PAUL W LAWRASON JR. JOHN E. Mayor Mayor Pro Tom Councilmember Councilmember Councilmember Printed On Recycled Paoer The Honorable City Council October 30, 1992 Page 2 Subsequent to the Ad Hoc Uniform Committee meeting on October 19th, staff investigated the availability of gray pants, and has found that the dark, charcoal gray color preferred by the Committee is not available. There are other options such as a lighter color gray, a dark blue (that is a different shade from that worn by Fire Department personnel), heather blue, and black. Implementation Staff expects to order the uniforms immediately after Council approval. It is expected that the new uniforms will be available by mid - December. The surplus items such as belts and jackets will be offered to the Police Department for possible use by cadets. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council approve the Ad Hoc Uniform Committee's proposal with the change of pant color from dark gray to black.
