SUBJECT: CONSIDER CHANGING CODE ENFORCEMENT UNIFORM
Background
At the City Council's meeting of September 9, 1992, the Council
appointed an Ad Hoc Uniform Committee, to consist of Mayor Lawrason
and Councilmember Talley. The Ad Hoc Committee was directed to
review and make recommendations for a new Code Enforcement Officer
uniform.
The Ad Hoc Uniform Committee met on October 19, 1992. The
recommendations of that committee are discussed below.
Discussion
The recommendations of the Ad Hoc Uniform Committee are as
follows:
Uniform should be worn by Code Enforcement Officers and should
consist of the following:
White shirt with pocket(s) and dark gray slacks
Matching jacket (gray or black)
Matching patches on sleeve of shirt to include City
logo and the words "code enforcement"
Identification tag to be worn on shirt
No badge to be worn on shirt but should be carried
in badge case or wallet
Regular black dress belt to be worn. Only
equipment which should be attached to belt is
radio. Tape recorder is to be carried in pocket of
shirt.
Flashlight should be kept in car but not attached
to belt
No handcuffs or mace shall be carried by code
enforcement officers
Protection against dogs may be carried.

Subsequent to the Ad Hoc Uniform Committee meeting on October 19th,
staff investigated the availability of gray pants, and has found
that the dark, charcoal gray color preferred by the Committee is
not available. There are other options such as a lighter color
gray, a dark blue (that is a different shade from that worn by Fire
Department personnel), heather blue, and black.
Implementation
Staff expects to order the uniforms immediately after Council
approval. It is expected that the new uniforms will be available
by mid - December. The surplus items such as belts and jackets will
be offered to the Police Department for possible use by cadets.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the Ad Hoc Uniform
Committee's proposal with the change of pant color from dark gray
to black.
