AGENDA REPORT TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: Christine Adams, Director of Community Service DATE: June 24, 1994 (Meeting of July 6, 1994) SUBJECT: Condition of High Street Pevver Trees and Recommendation to Remove Two Mature Pepper Trees BACKGROUND The attached is a report from Pat,l Rogers, a certified arborist, who's firm, Poly Associates, i s , sub- contractor for Bob's Tree Service, the City's contractor f.c,r Tree maintenance. Mr. Rogers did an inspection of sfweral areas within the City and has provided a detailed assessrrerit of the condition and current maintenance program for the peppFar trees along High Street. The pepper trees along High Stree are rec=ognized as a historical landmark in the City, and as suet, require special attention and care. In the last year, the park maintenance staff have noticed some problems in the trunk st:ru tore of the trees. However, due to the age of the t;:F—s, and the general life span of this particular species, some he older trees need to be monitored more carefully. This has revealed a large cavity inside m( °,ree s trunk and this cavity extends downward into the trunk. hurthermore, the t,..o remaining branches which are just above this breakage and cavity area are quite large ar i ar, A ,imilar size - research has shown that such limbs even without damage beneath , cm arc (I rite subject to breakage. I regret to recommend the removal ( I hest twe trees but I would be quite remiss not to do so.
