BACKGROUND The Achilles Levy Foundation was founded in 1969 to serve as the Bank of A. Levy ' s corporate contributions program. The Foundation has served Ventura County well over the years, providing grants to support the enhancement of the arts in many local communities . The Foundation has determined primary areas of funding which are: Education, including Arts in Education and Youth Enrichment Programs; Arts and Culture; and a small amount of funding in the Civic and Community funding area. Considering the limited resources that the City of Moorpark has and with the uncertainty of the impending fiscal year, staff is recommending that the city apply for grant funds from the Achille Levy Foundation. These funds, if awarded, could be used to fund cultural arts programs, which would benefit the quality of life in the community. In cooperation with the Moorpark Arts Association, the city plans to apply for a grant amount of $7000 .00, which would fund a summer concert series for 1994, at Arroyo Vista Community Park . The funding would cover the costs of staging, sound, lighting (if needed) , and the contracting of performing arts groups . Funding through this grant, or with contributions by local businesses will enable the city to offer this program free to the residents of Moorpark as well as non residents . The provision of a program that would have regional as well as local appeal may strengthen the city ' s application for this grant . These summer concerts would each provide a different style of music, in order to appeal to a variety of tastes, ages, and cultural groups . Suggested musical groups would include country-western, big band, symphony, reggae, jazz , latin, and folk . The concerts would be advertised as entertainment for the whole family. The Parks and Recreation Commission has discussed the need to "balance" the offerings of the Recreation Department by including more arts and cultural programs . Funding for a summer concert series through the Foundation will begin to meet this goal without impacting the city' s general fund resources . RECOMMENDATION Direct staff to apply for grant funds through the Achille Levy Foundation to provide a summer concerts in the park series for the city of Moorpark.
