GILLESPIE Chief of Police RICHARD T. HARE City Treasurer Communit Consider Type of Turf Grass for South Meadows Park DISCUSSION: The approved turf grass for South Meadows Park is Triple Crown Fescue, a cool season grass. This grass is similar to the grass planted at Campus Canyon Park. Triple Crown is an excellent turf grass. However, due to our current drought conditions and general desire to use less water at public facilities, staff is recommending the turf grass be changed to Common Bermuda grass, a perennial warm season subtropical turf grass. There are a number of reasons for recommending Bermuda grass; low maintenance, pest free, disease tolerant, extremely hardy to high traffic areas and self- rejuvenating. However, the main reason is that Bermuda grass requires less water than most grasses to sustain its growth. Also, during the cool months of the year when the turf is dormant, November through February, watering can be completely stopped without the risk of the turf dying. As you are aware, a potential down side to using Bermuda grass is that. the turf is brown during its dormancy period. Last December, Council approved the overseeding of the Peach Hill softball outfield with Common Bermuda grass. Additionally, staff contacted Mr. Fletcher Friedman, Administrator, Parks and Planning for Conejo Recreation and Park District, as Conejo Recreation and Park District had overseeded most of their parks with Common Bermuda 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, California 93021 (805) 529 -6864 The Honorable Page 2 February 27, City Council 1991 approximately one year ago. Mr. Friedman indicated they have experienced approximately a 40o reduction in water usage since the parks were overseeded. A.
