Director of Community Development JOHN F. KNIPE City Engineer JOHN V. GILLESPIE Chief of Police RICHARD T. HARE City Treasurer TO: The Honorable C Council FROM: Susan Cauldwel , sistant to the City Manager DATE: March 13, 1991 SUBJECT: Relocation of Post Office The Post Office moved from its former location on High Street to the Town Center in late 1984. As you are aware, this move has resulted in a decrease in pedestrian traffic in the downtown area. The downtown study, which was completed in 1989, recommends that the City "create a downtown meeting/ marketplace that will help renew the vitality of High Street...". Returning the Post Office to the downtown area will increase pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area and may also result in increased awareness of other services available in the downtown area. Because the Postal Service is a federal agency, it would be appropriate to discuss this matter with Congressman Elton Gallegly to see how he may assist in the proposed relocation. Staff Recommendations Staff recommends that the City Council concur with the proposed relocation of the Post Office to the downtown area and direct staff and the Council's Community Development Committee to begin discussions with Congressman Elton Gallegly's office to pursue this matter. pol 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, California 93021 (805) 529 -6864
