Dances are needed to pro \_de a healthy activity and atmosphere to reach th> risk" youths of the community. 2. Dances are currently losing money due to low attendance. Could be attributed tc, ,:)sts of entertainment and competition from other gi ;up:3 offering dances; High School, Middle School and 'r.)wn Peens. 3. Age group format change f i ( n 6, 7 & 8 grades to 7 to 9 grades confusing to those ii endinc., 4. Need to develop dances t(: i crease attendance and reduce costs. Could be done b, w, rk ing with other groups to rotate or stagger dances a mr nt hly basis or jointly cosponsor dances. 5. Return to 6, 7 & 8 gr_aa form�it . Would simplify checking I.D.'s and provid a3ditional activities for the Middle School studen—: s �h c:h ( rr rently have limited activities. Commissioner Stratton suggests; 1. Coordinate dances with th- M,dd, -e School. 2. Cannot continue to lose rn)nev or dances, recommends reducing the number of ri in , E t ) i maximum of six (6) for FY 1991/92. Commissioner Corzine suggests: 1. Reduce dances to six (one e-, •ry ot-h(�r month) . 2. Dance format should accomm =,date all age groups. Two dances per year dedicated 'or grades 6 through 8; two dances per year dedicated f )r .grades 9 through 12; and two dances per year dedicate' '.cr grades 6 through 12. 3. Each dance would have a -1� f 3 erent theme to relate to a holiday or event during tl mont: of the dance; i.e. Valentines dance, Halloweo, arce The Honorable City Council Page 3 7/12/91 As Council is aware, $3,000 wa. approved for youth dances in the Recreation Special Ever _s budget for FY 1991/92. Currently, costs for a yout:,i Lance are approximately $500, which includes $200 for secucit , .J.20C for entertainment, and $100 for staff supervision anti :leanuj�. If these costs hold for FY 91/92, we will be abl.< t.() provide six dances this year. By cosponsoring each da ce, costs for the dances may be shared, and we will be ac >l( t.) pry vide additional dances or enhance each of the rune�.s by hiring better entertainment. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: 1. Offer six (6) to eig�t 4f y uth dances during FY 1991/92. 2. Change attendance requice ent.s f om 7th and 8th grades to 6th, 7th and 8th grad —s 3.
