Lindley, Assistant to the City Manger September 24, 1991 (CC Meeting 10/2/91) SUBJECT: Consider Authorizing the Mayor to send a letter to the Trustees of the California State University System expressing Support for the Development of a State University in Ventura County. Background Ventura County is the largest County in the State without a State University. The County currently has a temporary off -site campus housed in a rented office building in Ventura. The temporary site does not begin to address the higher education needs of Ventura County residents. LAFCO reports that classes are over -crowded and many students are turned away, which accounts for the more than 8,000 residents commuting to universities outside of the County each day. State Senator Gary Hart sponsored a Bill in 1990, to fund a study to search for a suitable off -site campus center. EIRs were conducted on several potential sites and earlier this month, the Board of Trustees choose the site located in Camarillo (100 acres between Camarillo and Oxnard). On September 24, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors restated its commitment to the development of a permanent off -site State University and to the site selected by the Board of Trustees. The City has recently received a letter from the League of Women Voters of Ventura County asking the that all cities demonstrate support for a permanent off -site State University campus in Ventura County by sending a letter of support.
