MEMORANDUM

FROM: Philip E. Newhouse,

Director of Comrnuni ty
~
DATE: September 26, 1991
SUBJECT: Consider Installation of
Equipment at Campus, Campus
and Griffin Parks
Children's Play
Canyon, Glenwood
Funds have been appropriated in the FY 1991/92 City budget
for various capital improvements at the above-referenced
neighborhood parks. Within the various capital improvements
at each park, a children's play area has been budgeted for
development. Additionally, funds have also been budgeted to
purchase play equipment at Campus ($7,800), Campus Canyon
($1,000), and Griffin Parks ($5,000). Funds were
appropriated for play equipment at Glenwood Park in the
amount of $5,000 in the FY 1990/91 budget but were
inadvertently not rebudgeted in the current budget.
The play areas at Campus, Glenwood and Griffin Parks are
under construction and will be completed around the first
week in October. The play area at Campus Canyon Park is
existing. The play equipment to be added can be installed
immediately.
Attached are copies of each of the play areas being
constructed at Campus, Glenwood and Griffin Parks. The area
to receive the play equipment is defined by measurements on
each page as follows:
,,.
Campus Park
Glenwood Park
Griffin Park
30' diameter
54' diameter
34' x 44' in size
Allowances were made at each play area for an eight foot free
fall safety landing zone between the play area and concrete
curbing. The free fall zone is the area required pursuant to
soon-to-be-enacted playground safety guidelines (January 1,
1992) published by the United States Consumer Products Safety
Commission.

Currently, there is existing play equipment at each park
where the new play equipment will be installed. Staff has
researched the manufacturer's recommended age group to use
the existing play equipment and is recommending play
equipment be purchased for use by children age four (4) and
under at each park.
Recommended play equipment area requirements, costs
spreadsheet and pictures of each structure are attached for
your review. The play units recommended are pre-designed by
Iron Mountain Forge.
The Parks and Recreation Commission considered this item at
their August 12, 1991, meeting. Some modifications were made
to three of the play structures which are noted on Exhibit
"A", a price sheet from Iron Mountain Forge.
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:
