TO: Honorable City Council
FROM: Dave Klotzle, City Engineer/Public Works Director/w
Prepared by: Shaun Kroes, Senior Management Analyst
DATE: August 23, 2013 (CC Meeting of 09/04/13)
SUBJECT: Consider Maintenance of Metrolink Memorial Plaque and Boulder in
the Metrolink South Parking Lot
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
September 12, 2008 will be the five-year anniversary of Ventura County Metrolink Train
111's collision with a Union Pacific freight train. Twenty-five people died, including five
Moorpark residents. To commemorate the event, a memorial plaque has been donated
to the City of Moorpark (City), which will be placed in a planter in the Metrolink South
Parking Lot. The plaque will be mounted to a boulder that has been relocated from the
City's Tierra Rejada landscape to the Metrolink Station. The plaque will be unveiled
during a memorial event in the afternoon of September 12, 2013 at the Metrolink
Station (specific information about the event will be provided to City Council separately).
The City will maintain the boulder and plaque as part of its current Ground Lease
Agreement with the Ventura County Transportation Commission for operation of the
South Parking Lot.
FISCAL IMPACT
Maintenance of the plaque and boulder will be covered by the City's Metrolink
Landscape Services budget, 5000.8510.8073.9331.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Concur with City's maintenance of the memorial plaque and boulder in the Metrolink
South Parking Lot.
