Knipe, Ass st.ant. city Engine Date: January 10, 1990 Subject: U -TURN MOVEMENT AT THE SPRING ROAD - NEW LOS ANGELES AVENUE INTERSECTION BACKGROUND INFORMATION rer At the last Council meeting, the City Engineer was requested to determine if there was enough clearance at the subject intersection to allow northbound U -turn me cements . We have reviewed the signing and striping plans for PD -•10 4 (Topa) and checked the striping at the intersection. Although most passenger vehicles can safely negotiate the U -turn mover - -nt large passenger vehicles may encounter some difficulty, Typically, 34 feet is the ma -imum required clearance between the painted centerline and the curb in order for U -turns to be allowed at an intersection. Per the project plans and field measurements, only 32 feet is available. Therefore, due to this distance and other difficulties noticed i, the field, the U -turn sign must be replaced with a "No U -tux 7" sign. We have already begun coordinating this; matter wit Caltrans. If approved by Caltrans, thi sign replacement should occur when the illuminated street name gns fT -r Spring Road are installed.
