Gilbert, Director of Public rk DATE: February 27, 1990 (City Council: 3 -7 -90) SUBJECT: Authorization to Advertise for Receipt of Bids for Miscellaneous Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter Repairs OVERVIEW This presents for consideration a request for authorization to advertise for receipt of bids for the subject projects. DISCUSSIOx A. Background In certain neighborhoods of the City, street tree roots have caused significant damage to sidewalks. The need to replace these damaged sidewalks has been recognized, and funds ($20,000) have been appropriated (Acc. No. 003- 4 -1142- 903 -010) in the curr4 nt year budget for this work. In addition to the needed si Aewalk repair, it is proposed that a drainage problem or Canaria Court be resolved prior to the upcoming Slur-r, Seal Project, by replacing a section of curb and gut:tE . B. Areas of Work The areas identified as ir, need of sidewalk, curb and gutter repairs are shown o. Exhibit 1. Tree Roots Much of the damage to sidewalks is the result of tree roots growing under and lifting portions of sidewalk. The project plans and specifications provide for the pruning of all tree roots which have intruded into any of the sidewalk removal areas. The plans do not call for the removal of any t:rec s . In order to prevent, or at least curtail, the re- occurrence of tree root dam <ige, the project design calls for the installation of tree root barriers where required, as determined b.} the City. The plans and specifications call for the Contractor to install certain tree root barrier materials which ,are to be purchased and provided by the City. D. Specifications The Plans and Specification:, and have been provided t(.,) under separate cover. E. Schedule for the project are complete the City Council for review It is anticipated that bids for presented to the City Council and sidewalk re- construc'- ion July 1. F. Fiscal Impact, 1. Budget Transfer Elsewhere on the Agenda this meeting is a Request for Authorization to Advertise for Receipt of Bids for the 1990 Slurry Seal Project. The Engineer's Estimate for that project is an amount sufficiently less than the funds budgeted.
