Consider a Publicity Program For
The City Transit System
The local intra -city transit system provides bus service five
days per week at 35 stops for . 5 hours each day. Currently,
Moorpark bus schedules and :rouge maps are given to the public
upon request. We generally r-ecEive about six calls a week
asking for this information. .t appears that there is a need
for a flyer that provides schedule and route information.
A public notice will be sent raut this month and provides a
low -cost ($350) opportunity to en'rance awareness of the
intra -city transit system.
A key element in the performance of a system is public
awareness of bus routes and sc°I':iedules . In general, awareness
can be enhanced through marl;.F_sting and advertising. Other
transportation providers ha`'c: Used various approaches to
inform the public about ryas: ':.ransi.t. services. The most
common are flyers, schedu I_c ,, tack mounted legends, and
subsidies.
In addition to the flyer, rnother step in developing a
publicity program might inval.,e the placement of a route and
schedule information legen.j,a eacfr hus stop. Various types
of legends are available: Gu:,de -a -Ride is a four -sided unit
that costs about $125 each tr.f Infopost is a one -sided unit
that costs about $80 each. s( ".`r and 'Phousand Oaks have found
that the Guide -a -Ride uritt: fare better' where more bus
schedule and route informat«on is needed, and that the
Infopost units are better whee. only specific information is
needed. For example, Guide r -Fide would be preferred in
downtown areas or where tray f4?s :c-cur (such as Moorpark

College). The Infopost wouLi be preferred at outlying bus
stops. The installation of this type of mixed legend system
would cost about $4,500 to :install, including materials and
labor. Staff is currently exploring the feasibility of a
quantity purchase in cooper tion with Ventura County to
reduce the unit cost.
Since the Chamber of Commerce now has an Executive Director,
it is feasible that a speci:.il marketing program could be
developed. Such a proggram might focus on providing
information to businesses, encouraging patronage, and
sponsoring legend installaticr[s for marketing.
In summary, a publicity program would include mailing flyers
to all City residents, in_,t,l l i r g l ogends and working with
the Chamber on marketing.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Ci'r Council receive and file the
report.
