SUBJECT: Route 118 Freeway Extension Alignment Study
OVERVIEW
This is an update of efforts underway to locate the alignment
of the future Route 118 Freeway westerly extension.
DISCUSSION
A. Background
Some time ago representatives of the City Council and staff
met with Caltrans officials to discuss the subject freeway
extension. It was agreed at that time that Caltrans would
conduct a preliminary study of the alignment and anticipated
project cost, if the City were to provide the needed aerial
topographic survey information.
B. Aerial Photography Contract
Last December the City retained a qualified firm to provide
the City with a variety of aerial photographic services.
Included in that contract was the required topographic
mapping information. The other aerial photo products
purchased by the City have been delivered. The contractor
anticipates that the topographic mapping data will be
delivered within ninety days.

C. Alignment Study
In recent discussions with Mr. Sommerhauser of Caltrans, it
was again conveyed that it was the intent of Caltrans to
proceed with the Route 118 alignment study as soon as the
aerial mapping data was received. Mr. Sommerhauser stated
that he expected such a project to take at least a year to
complete. He also stated that the initial steps of the
design development process would require meetings with City
staff to determine the City's long -range plans for street
patterns in the areas affected. An interest was also
expressed in having the required Environmental clearances
undertaken by the City in conjunction with any parallel
process being considered by the City (i. e. General Plan,
etc.).
Mr. Sommerhauser agreed to describe his understanding of this
process in a letter to be forwarded to the City within the
next two weeks. Upon receipt of that letter, copies will be
distributed to the City Council.
RECOMMENDATION
Direct staff as deemed appropriate.
