Events for Fall /Winter FY 1990/91
At the July 23, 1990, Parks and Recreation Commission
meeting, staff presented a recommended list of special events
for FY 1990/91 for Commission's consideration. Upon review
of staff's proposal, the Commission approved the Fall and
Winter events as presented excep' for the following changes:
FALL:
Fright Night - Charge admission fee of $3.00;
Pepsi Hot Shots - added $10C` for expenditures;
WINTER:
Ping Pong Tournament - Charge admission fee of $2.00;
ADD a St. Patrick's Day Dance for adults on March 16,
1991. (no allocation �)f funds)
The Spring and Summer, 1991, events will be considered at the
Commission's September 10, 1990, meeting. However, during
general discussions, the Commission indicated the Cinco De
Mayo event budget should be increased to $5,000. Upon
approval of those events, staff will provide the Council an
in -depth report of the Commis;'Lcn's special events for FY
1990/91.

SUBJECT: Consider FY 1990/91 Recreation Special Events
As you are aware, the City Council approved a $20,000
appropriation for Special Event:; within the Recreation budget
for FY 1990/91, exclusive of Cc.intry Lays and July 3 events.
The Council further approved the appropriated funds be
expended at the discretion c the Parks and Recreation
Commission.
To assist the Commission in establ.'._shing this year's Special
Events Program budget, staff ha:; prepared a recommended
Special Events and Activiti( Pr -ogram budget for your
consideration.
The program budget proposal waE, divided into four seasons of
the year encompassing all age cproups. A variety of programs
are proposed which include spars, arts and crafts, creative
arts and theme events.
Under the proposed programs, staff anticipates expenditures
of $25,420 and revenues of $17,070.00, which would leave a
total program fund balance of ;2,930.00. The actual program
expenditures for the proposed programs are $10,700.00, or
42.10 of the total proposed program budget.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Direct staff as deemed appropriate.

Treasure Island Pirate Treasure Hunt- A Summer Celebration

Ordinary rocks are spray painted gold and tossed into an open field.
Children, dressed as pirates, in age groups 3 -5, 6 -8 and 9 -11 are
set loose with bags to pick up all the treasure. Children return to the
prize table to turn in their "gold" and get their reward. Special prizes
may be donated. Refreshments, costume contest and coloring
contests .

Staff anticipates booking 6 -12 trips per year. Staff will present a
periodic list of suggested destinations to Commission for approval
prior to confirmation. Family oriented excursions could become a
major program for the City of Moorpark Department of Community
Services. One idea is as follows:
Our Beaches: a Family Experience. Santa Monica conservancy offers a bus /naturalist program
to local beaches. Docents will lead small groups through tidal pools and mountain canyons_
The cost for this program is about $70 for one busload.
Other family outings could include day trips to San Diego Zoo, LA
Zoo, Exposition Park, Children's Museum, IMAX Theater, Griffith
Observatory, Lasarium, Queen Mary etc. Focus on family activities
that are easy and fun.

This program offers an excellent opportunity for children to be
entertained by a variety of performers. Various groups perform
puppet shows, live shows etc..

Music, snacks and social interaction for teens highlight this
ongoing program, currently co- sponsored with MYAC. Profits, if
any, are shared, 50/50 with MYAC. MYAC also operates the snack
bar, collecting all, if any, profit there. All costs are incurred and paid
by the city. -
