GENOVESE City Treasurer TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: John F. Knipe, Assistant City Engineer DATE: April 14, 1988 SUBJECT: Truck Traffic Counts BACKGROUND INFORMATION As previously directed by the City Council, truck count data were obtained at strategic entrance points to the City to establish a baseline condition prior to the 101 Freeway construction project in the San Fernando Valley. Truck traffic counts were conducted from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and from 5:00 - 6: 00 p.m. , with the results shown in Figure 1. A peak hour and an off-peak hour were selected to provide an overview of truck traffic patterns throughout the day. In general, trucks consisting of three or more axles averaged 12% of the traffic stream during the morning off-peak hour and 3% of the traffic stream during the evening peak hour. The totals shown in Figure 1 reflect only trucks with three or more axles because the operating characteristics of 2 axle trucks are generally not significantly different from those of passenger cars. If two axle trucks were considered in the truck totals, truck traffic during the morning off-peak hour would average approximately 22% of the traffic stream and truck traffic during the evening peak hour would average approximately 20% of the traffic stream. It is emphasized that this data represents no more than an overview of truck traffic patterns through the City. It is our understanding that the Cities of Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks are also conducting truck traffic count programs for similar purposes. This information will be provided to the City as it becomes available. 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, California 93021 (805) 529-6864 Page -2- If the City wishes to estimate the impact of the 101 widening project on truck traffic within the City it is suggested that additional counts be conducted late this year, when it is expected that the freeway project will divert the greatest number of trucks through the City.
