Gilbert, Director of Public Works DATE: July 13, 1993 (Council Meeting 7-21-93) SUBJECT: Consider Relocation of Truck Routes Through the City OVERVIEW This requests approval of the future relocation of the Truck Routes through the City to conform to the realignment of State Route 118 following the opening of the Route 23/118 freeway connector. BACKGROUND The existing Truck Routes through the City were established pursuant to Resolution No. 88-510. All of these Truck Routes are located on a State Highway. It will be necessary to relocate certain of these Truck Routes to the new highway alignment. DISCUSSION A. Freeway Connector The Route 118/23 freeway connector is expected to be completed and opened in October of this year. When this occurs Route 118 will be relocated from Spring Road and from Los Angeles Avenue between High Street and College View Street, to New Los Angeles Avenue and the new freeway connector. Ultimately the old route will be relinquished to the City pursuant to the terms of the Freeway Agreement between the City and Caltrans. u ' Truck Routes July 1993 Page 2 B. Revised Truck Routes and Signs Attached as Exhibit 1 is a map depicting the existing Truck Routes. Attached as Exhibit 2 is a map depicting the recommended revised Truck Routes. Attached as Exhibit 3 is a map noting the location of certain Truck Route signs, with attachments showing the proposed sign copy. Many of these signs were approved by the prior resolution and are in place. C. Caltrans Approval The California Vehicle Code requires that the designation of Truck Routes on a State Highway by a local agency must first be approved by Caltrans. It will be necessary to forward this proposal to Caltrans for approval. Upon receipt of said approval, a resolution will be presented to the City Council repealing Resolution No. 88-510 and adopting the proposed revised Truck Routes. RECOMMENDED ACTION Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions: 1. Approve the proposed Truck Routes and related signs as set forth in Exhibits 2 and 3 of this report. 2. Direct staff to forward said proposed revised Truck Routes to Caltrans for approval. 3.
