Gilbert, Director of Public Works July 20, 1993 (Council Meeting 7- 21 -93) Consider Authorizing Transmittal of a Letter of Support to Caltrans for Proposed Improvements to Route 118 West of the City. The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) administers the pla ning process for the construction of major highway improvements in the County. During a recent meeting on this subject, Caltrans staff proposed that the improvement of Route 118 between Moorpark and Oxnard be considered as a higher priority. They proposed that eff its move forward for the construction of a conventional four - lan divided highway. The reasons cited were concerns regarding tra fic statistics which show the safety of this segment of State Hig way to be below acceptable standards. Aft r some discussion Caltrans and VCTC agreed that the first phase of his work should be the construction of specific improvements des gned to address the safety concerns. Those initial efforts wou d look at a number of improvements including the following: the reconstruction of the intersection at Lewis Road and Donlon Road; the construction of a grade separation at the rail crossing just west of Moorpark; and the construction of a truck weighing and inspection station just west of Moorpark. The e improvements are proposed to be funded by State and Federal saf ty improvement funds, not from the funding sources identified for major highway improvements in the County. This is to request that the City Council authorize the Mayor to forward a letter to Caltrans in support of the above proposed imp ovements. R MKENDATION Aut orize the Mayor to forward a letter to Caltrans in support of the Route 118 improvement discussed in this report. a-b
